And that's a wrap! Absolutely thrilled to see the success of the UrbanShift Indonesia City Academy, a true testament to the power of collaboration and shared knowledge in driving sustainable urban development. Over three days, #ICLEI and our partners at C40 Cities and World Resources Institute led in-person training on critical themes like Nature-based Solutions, Circular Economy, and Integrated Climate Action Planning—each of which plays a crucial role in shaping the future of our cities. The discussions around how to mainstream nature into urban policies, the transformative potential of circular economy practices beyond waste management, and the tailored climate action strategies for cities at different stages of development were particularly enlightening. A huge thank you to our incredible partners Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas Republic of Indonesia and Global Environment Facility for their dedication and support. The tools, insights, and strategies shared during this City Academy will undoubtedly empower cities across Asia to meet their sustainability goals and address the complex challenges of urbanization. #UrbanShift #SustainableCities #ClimateAction #CircularEconomy #NatureBasedSolutions

"When visitors leave a city with a smile and fond memories, eager to return." After three days of intense learning, collaboration, and reflection, the #UrbanShift Indonesia City Academy has come to a successful close! The knowledge exchanged and the connections made during this event have been instrumental in advancing Indonesia’s NDC 3.0 and driving sustainable urban transformation across the region. The event focused on three main themes: 🔄 Circular Economy: While the topic is still relatively underdeveloped, especially in waste management, it holds great potential. Just to name one example: Integrating AI into practices that can tackle complex issues such as dealing with nickel mines. 🌳 Nature-based Solutions: Cities often implement NbS without even realizing it. These solutions are not isolated but interconnected with circular economy and climate action planning. Reflecting on how these sectors integrate is crucial for effective policy implementation. 🔥 Integrated Climate Action Planning: Different context may need different approaches. That's why each city should tailor best practices and potential solutions to its own challenges and context. National governments should also support this by developing transformational, action-oriented goals that can attract funding at the local level. A special thank you to our partners Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas Republic of Indonesia, C40 Cities, ICLEI, UN Environment Programme, World Resources Institute and Global Environment Facility for their invaluable contributions to this event. #SustainableCities #CircularEconomy #ClimateAction #NatureBasedSolutions #UrbanPlanning #Bappenas #Jakarta

🌍 #WorldWaterWeek: Insights on urban water resilience, peace, and Social Justice In our era of poly-crises, the lack of access to water and sanitation is a catalyst for unrest, conflict, and exclusion. But it’s also a gateway to cooperation, peace, and resilience—if managed wisely. Urban water resilience goes beyond city borders, relying on catchment systems that stretch across regions. This makes transboundary governance essential, linking water to peace and security at both local and regional scales. 🏙️Understanding the complex, multi-directional relationships between water, broader socio-economic and geopolitical factors, and the potential for either conflict or cooperation requires a systems-based approach, building on local institutions. 💧 Sustainable, long-term, inclusive water governance can be achieved through an institutionalised partnership between a legally mandated technical water operator (such as a utility), local government and organisations embedded in local community relationships. 🤝Beyond conflict, the management of shared water resources can just as often be a catalyst for regional cooperation between diverse stakeholders. 🏠Adopting a holistic approach to water stewardship is only effective when it meaningfully and systematically includes those households and communities most marginalized and vulnerable to climate change and water-related hazards. ⚖️ Although legal mandates are an enabling factor, consistent inclusion of diverse stakeholders can be driven by any type of organization with the necessary motivation, vision, and deep-rooted relationships within the community. Let’s rethink how we manage water resources—not just as a necessity, but as a powerful tool for peace, security, and social justice. This marks a significant milestone in our global journey to create a crucial scientific resource on cities and climate change for all stakeholders, particularly national and local governments worldwide. ✅ Back in April, we laid the groundwork in Riga, and now the outline has been officially agreed upon. A standout moment of the scoping meeting was the collaboration between urban practitioners and scientists. 𝐁𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐞𝐭, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 #𝐈𝐏𝐂𝐂 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨-𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 a report rich in policy relevance and practical insights. I believe this report presents an unprecedented opportunity for the global community to reinforce multilevel climate action through scientific discourse. As an example, given that the #UNFCCC is a key audience for #IPCC reports, the SR-Cities has the potential to significantly contribute to the UNFCCC Global Stocktake 2. As the longest-established global network of cities and local governments, ICLEI has a rich history of engaging with the IPCC and supporting its cycles, particularly regarding cities and city-level climate action. ICLEI is committed to scaling up this engagement in AR7 and supporting the IPCC in the SR-Cities development journey. Together with our peer city networks and supporting partners, we will continue to support the co-creation process in the SR-Cities development journey by leveraging our networks, media outlets, and initiatives, such as #ICLEIWorldCongress, #DaringCities Annual Forum, and #Innovate4Cities. These platforms will serve as robust conduits for engaging cities and local governments with the SR-Cities and AR7, ensuring the final report becomes an indispensable resource for city climate action. A huge thanks to the IPCC Bureau and the SR-Cities Scientific Steering Committee (SSC), including, Diana Urge-Vorsatz, Winston Chow, Bart van den Hurk, Robert Vautard, Katherine Calvin, Joy Jacqueline Pereira, Siir Kilkis, @Xiaoye Zhang and others, for their hard work and dedication. And a special thanks to the stellar Debra Roberts for her instrumental role in the birth and growth of SR-Cities since 2016!
