To ensure that driver assistance systems and autonomous driving functions work reliably, they must recognize road users and objects in fractions of a second. The training of the perception systems that are responsible for this is based on huge amounts of data, most of which is still recorded in real road traffic. In HANSER automotive issue 4/2024, we outline a way to improve quality and reduce costs: Real data sets are enriched with synthetic data generated by physical sensor models in highly detailed 3D environments.
