In its Q2 2024 Semiconductor Manufacturing Monitor Report, SEMI saw significant growth of IC sales, stabilizing capital expenditure, and increased installed wafer fab capacity. Semiconductor capital expenditures remained conservative in the first half of 2024 but are expected to turn positive in Q3 2024. Memory CapEx is leading this growth at 16% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ). Foundry and Logic-related capacity showed stronger growth in Q2 2024 at 2.0% with Memory capacity up 0.7% in Q2 2024 and a projected 1.1% growth in Q3 2024. Reportedly, WD plans to split into two separate business units: one focused on producing hard disk drives (HDDs) and the other on NAND flash memory and SSDs. This strategy is expected to enhance operational efficiency within each unit, allowing them to concentrate on their core strengths and ultimately achieve greater market value. The NAND and SSD side of Western Digital (based on acquiring SanDisk nine years ago for $19 billion) could be valued between $10 billion and $23 billion as a standalone business. Big news for the European Semiconductor Industry: TSMC broke ground yesterday on its first European plant in Dresden. The company selected the Dresden site in August 2023, and production is expected to begin in 2027. TSMC will hold 70% of the new European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (ESMC) with Bosch, Infineon and NXP holding 10% each. The plant will make chips for the automotive and industrial sectors. By the end of 2029, ESMC expects to have a monthly production capacity of 40,000 300 mm (12-inch) wafers produced on TSMC’s 28/22 nanometer planar CMOS and 16/12 nanometer FinFET process technology. The new facility is expected to create 2,000 direct jobs as well as numerous indirect jobs throughout the EU supply chain. The 2024 Future of Memory and Storage (FMS) conference that took place earlier this month provided important insights in digital storage and memory applications and product development. Formally known as Flash Memory Summit, FMS kept its initials but expanded its reach to cover all aspects of digital storage and technology. According to TrendForce Corporation, the DRAM industry saw a 24.8% revenue increase in the second quarter of 2024. This surge was driven by expanded shipments of mainstream products that boosted revenue for most manufacturers. In terms of profitability, the rise in DRAM contract prices, full utilization of production capacity, reversal of inventory write-down losses, and higher sales of premium products such as DDR5 and HBM allowed manufacturers to maintain profitability in Q2. Contract prices remained on an upward trend in the second quarter, and due to geopolitical factors, the increase in conventional DRAM contract prices for the third quarter is now expected to exceed previous forecasts. Consequently, TrendForce has revised the Q3 contract price increase for conventional DRAM to 8%–13%, approximately 5 percentage points higher than the previous forecast.
