Keeping the lights on in Myanmar. At this point, the industrial gas turbine sector might as well certify mechanics as 1980s action heroes, starting with MTU Power’s Steven Walkingshaw, Alexander Govan, Robby Winter, Matt Jones, Marvin Kuhlbrodt and the local support personnel in Thailand. The team members from MTU Maintenance Berlin-Brandenburg, MTU Maintenance Service Center Australia and MTU Maintenance Service Center in Ayutthaya, Thailand, traveled to Myanmar during the recent monsoon season to service a pair of IGT’s. The task included an LPC repair and replacement of the hot section in one of the LM6000’s, as well as maintenance of the second one. “There was a certain amount of pressure to get the job done, since the half of the energy supply of that locality depends on these IGT’s,“ explains Marvin Kuhlbrodt, Field Service mechanic at MTU Maintenance Berlin-Brandenburg. While the tech team flew into Myanmar, the transport truck carrying the required tooling and replacement IGT parts from Thailand hit a snag when a landslide took out the road on which it was traveling. The local drivers had to load all material onto pickups and traverse the jungle passes to deliver the goods to their destination. Despite the circumstances, the team was able to complete “one of the biggest possible repairs that can be done in the field" on the LPC, adds Kuhlbrodt. A bit more work is scheduled in the near future, so …. We’ll Be Back! #WeAreEngineExperts #MRO #IGT

One thing’s for sure: it’s never boring at MTU. Our Field Service teams go to some spectacular locations to service industrial gas turbines. In a recent episode on an oil rig off the coast of Scotland, MTU Power mechanics replaced the gas generator of an LM2500, in addition to installing a new power turbine. It was the first time our experts completed an HSPT replacement off-shore, for which they had to design a playbook ahead of their deployment. Needless to say, it was smooth sailing. #WeAreEngineExperts #MRO
