Since nature and biodiversity can be #complex and #abstract, today we want to share a #story. A story about why it’s essential for companies to measure and manage their impact on nature, identify risks, and seize opportunities. Because stories often resonate longer than mere #facts. Take this story to the next strategy meeting with the CEO, budget planning with the CFO, or simply to discuss over lunch with your colleagues. 🌳 Deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest Cattle ranching is responsible for 60-80% of Amazon deforestation. From 2017 to 2022, deforestation near meat plants in the Amazon covered an area equivalent to a triangle linking Amsterdam, Brussels, and Dortmund. From 2001 to 2020, the total Amazon deforestation reached 550,000 km² - an area the size of a triangle connecting Paris, Madrid, and Rome. 🌍 Consequences for JBS JBS, the world’s largest meat producer, has faced scrutiny for sourcing cattle from illegally deforested areas, resulting in fines and lost business. In 2017, JBS was fined $8 million for purchasing 50,000 cattle from such lands, prompting retailers like Lidl GB (global) and Sainsbury's to reconsider their beef sourcing. 💼 Other Financial and Legal Implications JBS's potential New York Stock Exchange listing has raised concerns among U.S. Senators and environmental groups about increased deforestation, fearing that new funds could further increase deforestation. Additionally, NGOs have filed complaints against French banks financing JBS, citing violations of French law. This story underscores the high cost of business practices that harm nature and biodiversity... and the value of recognising and mitigating the risks in advance. Have you heard about similar cases? #naturerisk #businessrisk #NalaEarth

Very happy & grateful to have hosted such an incredible event of #BiodiversityChampions and #NatureHeroes! Our rooftop terrace and Berlin's weather this week were on our side. 😎 And what's even better: we got to support an important cause at the same time! A big thank you to Antonio Rohrßen and Patagonia for bringing the #UnaRiver scandal to our attention. What is the Una? The Una is a 212km-long river flowing between Bosnia and Herzegovina & Croatia. In other words: a vital water source for locals (especially in midst of current heat waves), home to 17 threatened species, and a protected Natura 2000 site, an EU initiative to preserve important habitats. Unfortunately, this precious river is now under threat. A local investor has begun constructing a hydropower project on the Una, disregarding its protected status and lacking valid permits. Once seen as a renewable energy source, #hydroelectric dams are now recognized for their harmful effects: they destroy river ecosystems, threaten local communities' food security and livelihoods, and emit methane that worsens climate change. It’s easy to feel powerless in such situations, but not this time: Check out Oliver Dauert's post below for 4 simple steps the Patagonia team has put together that you can take to help! 👇👇👇👇 To cite Oli: Let’s unite and raise our voices for nature! ✊🌍 #SaveUna #Nature #ProtectedAreas #Biodiversity #NatureManagement

Stand up for the Una river: Protect a natural wonder from illegal damming 💡 Why does it matter? This pristine river is a vital ecosystem supporting countless species & communities. The illegal damn put this at risk. 🏞️ What is the Una? A 212km long river between Bosnia and Herzegovina & Croatia. Una means "The One." Because of her incredible beauty, the Romans gave her this matching name. A crucial water source for locals. It's a protected Natura 2000 site (EU initiative to preserve habitats). 🧐 What happened? 2 weeks ago, a local investor started constructing a hydropower project that threatens the Una. Ignoring protected status & without valid permits. Since then, brave locals are attempting to block the construction. Every day counts to avoid further distractions. The Una & their locals need your help. 💪 1 Action you can take  Raise awareness. Patagonia's team around Antonio Rohrßen & Nina Hajikhanian created 4 easy steps how you can help. 1️⃣ Take a photo with a sign saying 'Save Una' (selfie or group photo)   2️⃣ Share it on your social media tagging the Croatian prime minister Andrej Plenkovic. Suggested copy in comments (use your own [location]) 3️⃣ Send your photo to Louise Brierley-Ingham or Lauren Henshaw, so Patagonia can share them with the locals 4️⃣ Ask 3 friends to do the same. I would love to tell you that the case of the Una is unique. But my mum taught me not to lie. Such activities happen daily across the world. We keep on taking more & more of nature until none will be left. Let's not sit on the sidelines & watch how greed is wracking up the next nature landmark. Let's unite & raise our voices.   #SaveUna #biodiversity #nature Thank you for speaking up Antonio Rohrßen & Anna Stella Kaschke, Helene Bendig, Lasse Anbuhl, Gilles Toussaint, Simone Boecker, Darina Onoprienko ☕, Dr. Hannah Schragmann, Silke Düwel-Rieth, Dr. Jasmin Wiefek, Serena Bonomi for joining this call to save the Una.

A Week for the Books! Last week might have seemed a bit quiet around Nala, but for a very good reason: we had our Company Offsite in Brandenburg, in the countryside surrounded by nature. What was officially a trip with colleagues felt more like a getaway with friends. Especially given our remote setup, these in-person experiences are even more valuable for building a strong, resilient culture and making Nala a fun place to work. Besides the official agenda (see below), we laughed our heads off with games like Activity, delved into deep topics thanks to Hotel Matze's set of questions, had joint morning runs to grab the best local honey, and showcased our cooking skills. And a final dip in the Elbe in the last rays of sunshine of the day was also a must. On the agenda: 🐦 Building birdhouses and bug basements (and no, it’s not a graveyard) 📜 Writing a press release for Nala 2030, where everyone could share their vision for the next ≈ 6 years 🌼 Hunting for the invasive species “Ragwort” (dt: Jakobs-Greiskraut), which can cause liver damage in cows if ingested, with our dear friend & farmer Lutz. Here are our 3 main takeaways: - The Circle of Life: Cow feces attracts insects which are then eaten by birds that spread the feces and thus fertilize the soil. This natural cycle is interrupted when cows are kept in stables. - Every Creature Counts: In Siberia, the loss of megafauna, like wolves and mammoths, weakens the entire ecosystem. A good example that both the largest and smallest creatures play crucial roles. - Moderate Meat Production: With 0.6 livestock units per hectare (compared to the usual 2), it is possible to enjoy sustainable meat and dairy products without relying on industrial farming practices (such as Tönnies & Co do). Here's to many more amazing offsites - will it be Barcelona, Sweden or London next? Thanks to our multicultural team, we have plenty of exciting options! What has been your favourite offsite experience so far? The very first person to contact us after founding Nala Earth was Johannes Knubben, Head of Sustainability at HiPP-Gruppe (Baby Food Manufacturer), saying, "I want to work with you!" For a company whose philosophy is "producing the highest quality products in balance with nature," this step was obvious and extremely courageous at the same time. We immediately went into the doing, analysing several HiPP production and supplier sites across Europe using our Nature Management Tool. This involved assessing the condition of nature and biodiversity along their supply chain, gaining a high-level overview of nature impacts and dependencies, and identifying hotspots. Our top 3 insights we gained from the analysis were: 🌲 Tree Population Changes: We identified areas where the tree population had changed over time, which Hipp then discussed with suppliers to find solutions. 💦 Water Stress: We pinpointed production sites particularly affected by high water stress, requiring active management in collaboration with site managers. 🌍 Proximity to Protected Areas: We discovered sites located near protected areas, highlighting the need for vigorous biodiversity protection efforts. As the saying goes, "What we cannot measure, we cannot manage", these insights form the foundation for nature-positive action, including strategy definition, target setting, and implementation. Johannes is optimistic about the upcoming CSRD reporting initiative: "CSRD is not just a reporting obligation for us, but also a reporting opportunity. It presents opportunities in transformation and to manage existing natural risks while actively seeking potential competitive advantages!" Check out Johannes & Anna’s presentation at the "Biodiversity in Good Company" Conference for a glimpse into our joint project. Dear Johannes, we look forward to continuing this journey together and are extremely proud to have you as a Strategic Advisor on our side! #BiodiversityInGoodCompany #Nature #Biodiversity #CSRD #Hipp

"The risk of doing nothing is much greater than the risk of using imperfect data” - Yoni Pasternak, Chief Commercial Officer at Nala Earth. The economy is witnessing a growing emphasis on nature due to new disclosure regulations (e.g., EU CSRD), EU restoration policies (e.g., EU Nature Restoration Law), and advancements in frameworks and measurement technologies (e.g., TNFD). While companies still grapple with mitigating their impact, more are voluntarily taking responsibility for their environmental footprint. Check out Yoni Pasternak's, CCO at Nala Earth, latest interview on "How Nature is Moving Up on the Corporate Agenda". Thanks Cleantech Group & Holly Stower for this opportunity!
