Hear from our recent team member, Mathilde HOARAU, on her experience at OVL: "As an intern at OVL, I had the pleasure of analysing the legal implications of adopting the Universal Declaration of Ocean Rights (#UDOR). The analysis emphasises the importance of a shift from the current law-making model to one that is centred around Nature/the Ocean while clarifying the outcomes of such a transformation. It also outlines the functions of the UDOR and explains how it interacts with some ocean-related regimes. Beyond that, I also contributed to a project relating to the recognition of #WhaleRights. This internship was rewarding as I was given the opportunity to change the current narrative in law-making by contributing to translating a new worldview, that integrates and promotes a broader set of values, into law in order to ensure more effective Ocean protection. Ultimately, this experience did not only allow me to better understand the #RightsofNature but also confirmed how promising the tools it provides are. The support and benevolence of the #team allowed me to grow as a researcher by giving me the guidance I needed throughout the project as well as sufficient leeway to build critical reasonings. It is our collective will and responsibility to foster a more just and sustainable relationship with our vital global commons: all life on Earth depends on it. We need an ocean-literate society that advocates for policies that respect the ocean’s inherent right to exist, flourish and regenerate. The ocean literacy movement has undergone a remarkable evolution. From its beginnings as a school-based initiative to teach ocean science, it has blossomed into a vibrant, global community that recognizes the ocean's vital importance to our future. This diverse network, spanning cultures, generations, and geographies, shares a passion for the ocean and a commitment to respect it. Excited to share I was invited to the Steering Committee of the UN Ocean Decade Coordination Office on Connecting People and the Ocean, and have the pleasure of working alongside such a diverse and passionate group of people! I was ecstatic to see Ocean Rights included in the draft white paper for Challenge 10, and Ocean Vision Legal shared our recommendations for how to make the strategic ambition and needs for Ocean Rights clear, as well as implementation pathways. As I shared in my recommendation, we cannot talk about shifting humanity's relationship with the Ocean without talking about the law! Laws are created by societies based on their values – vise versa, laws can fundamentally reshape the underpinning values and principles that guide decision makers. Similarly, laws designed to protect and conserve the Ocean will prove ineffective and lack enforcement if our relationship with the Ocean does not change. In this way, values, ethics and norms are important drivers of policy and economic activity and they must be addressed in order to transform humanity’s relationship with the Ocean from one of exploitation to reciprocity. The relationship between values and legal norms (legal frameworks) are essential to include, as legal personality is a legal mechanism, as well as an ethical and relational framework.
