At first glance, nothing, but on closer inspection it may be more than you think: some pharmaceutical or medical products contain raw materials derived from deforestation.
Deforestation threatens the environment and the habitats of various animal and plant species. Some of the commodities for which forests are cut or altered are coffee, cocoa, cattle, rubber, timber, soy and palm oil.
The EU has therefore issued a regulation to reduce deforestation. The EU Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR) requires companies, that trade, import or export products or raw materials to the EU, to provide evidence of the region of origin of these resources.
What medical products contain these raw materials?
✅ #Rubber: a versatile raw material often used in latex gloves, catheters, medical balloons, breathing tubes or plasters, for example.
✅ #Palmoil: one of the main drivers of deforestation, used in palm oil-based medicines, wound dressings and plasters containing glycerin, as well as in soaps, shampoos and creams.
✅ #Wood: often used in tongue depressors, cotton swabs, cellulose incontinence pads, wood furniture or bed frames.
✅ #Cattle: less commonly found in medical products, but some medications are made from or made with bovine gelatin.
