I've never thought it would be so painful to build the 𝗦𝗢𝗡𝗶𝗖 𝗩𝗦 image from 𝗚𝗶𝘁𝗛𝘂𝗯! 😱 ( you're lucky enough to skip this pain by reading my story below! 🍀) .... it all started with one tiny error - 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗲:47: 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁/𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰-𝘃𝘀.𝗶𝗺𝗴.𝗴𝘇 𝗘𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿 2... and it snowballed from there. What seemed like a simple task quickly turned into a nightmare... ( several nights, hundreds of repetitions, millions of cups of coffee, and tons of sweets later... ) ... we got it! 🤗 It's always about resources! 🙃 ( come on! We can build SONiC on a machine with 32 vCPU, 128GB RAM, 500GB disk in 10 minutes! yyyyhy... no way😉) The root cause was that we set the wrong argument in this super magic option 𝗦𝗢𝗡𝗜𝗖_𝗕𝗨𝗜𝗟𝗗_𝗝𝗢𝗕𝗦. We have 32 vCPU, so why not not put 32 there?! 😎 ... and that was the mistake. After an hour of compilation, we failed... We noticed later that we were out of resources - why?! 32 vCPU, 64GB RAM, 500GB disk is not enough?! 😱 ... it's enough but seems there is a strict correlation between the number of vCPUs and RAM in the compilation process. We discovered the following machine configurations work best: 4 𝘃𝗖𝗣𝗨, 16𝗚𝗕 𝗥𝗔𝗠, 500𝗚𝗕 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗸, 𝗦𝗢𝗡𝗜𝗖_𝗕𝗨𝗜𝗟𝗗_𝗝𝗢𝗕𝗦=4 Test PASSED - total time: ~ 4h 4m 8 𝘃𝗖𝗣𝗨, 32𝗚𝗕 𝗥𝗔𝗠, 500𝗚𝗕 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗸, 𝗦𝗢𝗡𝗜𝗖_𝗕𝗨𝗜𝗟𝗗_𝗝𝗢𝗕𝗦=8 Test PASSED - total time: ~ 2h 40m 16 𝘃𝗖𝗣𝗨, 64𝗚𝗕 𝗥𝗔𝗠, 500𝗚𝗕 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗸, 𝗦𝗢𝗡𝗜𝗖_𝗕𝗨𝗜𝗟𝗗_𝗝𝗢𝗕𝗦=16 Test PASSED - total time: ~2h 2m Hmmm.... ok, but how do I start the compiling process of 𝗦𝗢𝗡𝗶𝗖 𝗩𝗦? This is the right question! I've never thought starting play with #SONiC could be so easy! 🤯 ( here’s a quick guide on setting up a #GNS3 appliance template for SONiC using the GNS3 Web UI ) 1️⃣ Download the SONiC image from the SONiC GitHub repository. Log into your GNS3 Web UI, head to “Appliances,” and create a “New Appliance.” Name it "SONiC Switch," choose "QEMU VM" as the template type, and allocate some resources like 2 CPUs and 4 GB RAM 🖥️ 2️⃣ Upload the SONiC image and set it as the default. Configure the network settings by adding the necessary adapters 🌐 3️⃣ Save your appliance and add it to a GNS3 project. Power it on, connect it to other devices, and start configuring your network ⚙️ .... and there you have it!
