Congratulations to Cosmic Aerospace and the team around Christopher Chahine, Marshall Gusman & Joe Wilding for successfully closing their $4.5m seed round to decarbonize air travel! We look forward to working with the team and our co-investors Pale blue dot, Fifty Years, Aera VC, and Possible Ventures on propelling electric aviation forward! 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴? Cosmic Aerospace focuses on developing the world’s first electric aircraft capable of flying up to 1,000 kilometers (more than 600 miles), representing a step-change in range among current electric aircraft offerings. This puts them in a unique position to lead the transition toward zero-carbon air travel, starting with regional aviation, thus already covering more than 50% of global flights. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? The aviation industry currently contributes ~3% of global annual CO2 emissions, with a significant portion coming from flights under 1,000km. Even though several technology pathways exist in this sector, Cosmic's focus stands out to us as a pragmatic approach to decarbonizing air travel thanks to reduced operational costs of electric aircraft and being able to build on existing charging technology. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲? Our decision to invest was primarily driven by the match between “meaningful, outsized opportunity” and our belief in the exceptional capabilities of the team. Not many teams can claim that they've already worked on 20 manned aircraft development programs, built five aircraft from start to first flight, set a flight world record, and, with Cosmic, have already built the first electric motor with the performance of a jet engine. We are impressed by their first-principles approach to aircraft design that maximizes aerodynamic efficiency and pushes the limits of the Breguet Range Equation. These spooky reactors 🤖 need some #engineering! (And we're #hiring) [You guys delivered last week so we thought we'd share more :D] Our young team has more openings for rockstar scientists and engineers who could help us tame these rogue reactors (that are still in Halloween mode) and work on our novel bioproduction approach. In particular, we're looking for an Electrochemical Systems engineer and a Bioelectrochemist to lead reactor and process development respectively (links for applying below).
