At the Environmental Finance Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, we use town websites to find contact information, locate water rates, and link towns around the United States to our resources, such as our water rates dashboards. Although some town websites are well-designed and easy to navigate, others can be difficult to use. This post highlights 5 engaging town websites and offers helpful tips to guide towns in constructing a website that will impress town residents and improve communication between the town hall and its citizens.

  • Capstone: Jordan Lake Nutrient Management Study

    Worked with a team of 8 UNC students to develop a comprehensive study of initiatives improving water quality in Jordan Lake. The project involved conducting data collection, creating GIS maps, writing a report, and publishing relevant data to the project website. At the end of the semester, we presented our findings to our community client, the Jordan Lake One Water Association.

    Germany has become a world leader in renewable energy, getting up to 85% of its daily energy from wind and solar. This film was produced as a video project for Dr. Greg Gangi's Honors Burch Field Research Seminar in Germany and the Netherlands, 2017. It focuses on the unique ways German government and individual citizens have influenced the Energiewende - the German energy transition. The film is now used as an instructional tool in ENEC 201 classes, and is frequently used to publicize for…

  • GIS Analysis: The Extent of Coal Ash Pollution in North Carolina Rivers

    Performed a geographic analysis of the prevalence of coal ash in North Carolina rivers for GEOG 491 (Introduction to GIS). The project analyzed portions of NC rivers and streams directly affected by coal ash particulate pollution, and used average stream flow to determine the distance pollutants travel from 12 major coal plants.

  • Mapping Campus Food Politics

    Contributed to a class project mapping campus food politics for GEOG 435 (Environmental Politics). Performed interviews, compiled a data report, and published a web page on Carolina Cupboard, a campus food pantry organization. The class analysis on 10 campus food organizations was presented to the Food For All Committee, which used the analysis in their efforts to promote food security across campus.
