    Project:
    Verisure Securitas Direct has a strong culture, a type of Digital Acquisition artisanship which has been responsible for great success. Their website is a key business driver and is responsible for significant acquisition achievements, but the effects of the website are not homogenous across all countries. As the group looks towards doubling the installations by 2020, it has become necessary to transform the acquisition website centrally.
    The key focus of this multi-site platform build is to keep the speed and flexibility currently enjoyed by markets but with the added benefits of easy and fast share and reapply principles. This essentially means that success stories can be transplanted and quickly replicated by all markets - even those without large local teams and agency support.

    Together with our partner OgilvyOne Paris, we consulted the client throughout the pre-envisioning phase, providing consulting, requirement engineering, project planning and scoping and a detailed technical architecture proposal.

    We supported Verisure’s IT staff in collecting and consolidating technical and functional requirements, with a strong focus on security topics as well as choosing a fitting hosting partner (cloud-based platform-as-a-service).

    Approach and activities:
    As technical lead and senior consultant, I support and coach project and account management strategically and in day-to-day business. I devise and optimize processes for quality assurance (constructive and analytical QA, providing standards and automated testing), deployment and continuous integration best practices as well as release management to the markets.
    I account for release planning and management, deployments, coordination of security scan.

    I instruct and train the team, providing standards and supervising their implementation.
    I consult with and coordinate the client and their security unit, the brand agency, the technical service providers and the hosting provider.
    I am also responsible for integrating 3rd party components, partly from external web agencies, partly from international ( European and Asian) subsidiaries of the customer.

    While some parties run a waterfall approach, most work is done using agile methodologies (Scrum and Kanban). The processes have to embrace both approaches.

    The project is set up internationally, including business travels and communicating with parties with diverse national and cultural backgrounds.

  • Nestlé Global / Nestlé France: Integrating Customer Identity & Access Management (Gigya) with Drupal

    Project:
    In 2016, Nestlé started to use Gigya for Customer Identity Access Management (CIAM) with all their digital solutions.
    ETECTURE piloted this by coordinating and implementing the integration with the NIN MBF master platform, including the first rollout to production on the French site.

    DHL Inhouse Consulting is the international strategy and management consultancy of Deutsche Post DHL. It is a globally recognized company serving Europe, the Americas, EMEA, and Asia Pacific.

    Inhouse Consulting leverages a regular survey to assess team mood. It is conducted fort- nightly, participation is voluntary.

    The survey is facilitated through a Drupal-based web application featuring:
    - Self registration of users on website user interface
    - Website sends reminders for survey automatically
    Standardized data analysis conducted automatically including dynamic graphs (based in Javascript library „Highchart“)
    - Standardized output made available automatically on website
    - Besides normal users there are also super users, seeing all results of all projects
    - Super users have access to additional analyses, namely highest/lowest 3 scoring projects (overall team average), highest/lowest 5 individual team answers.

    All project communication and documentation is conducted in English.
    In particular, the issues of change management, deployment, rollout, quality assurance (incl. Security testing) and hosting infrastructure presented challenges within the complex processes of a major international company which we successfully mastered.

    Methods, tools and technologies used:
    We developed personas, to prototype user types and contexts. Target groups, user needs and personas helped to develop suitable user journeys.
    Based on this, we proposed an information architecture that is customized for the user.
    Afterwards we held detailed meetings and workshops with all relevant organizational units.

    Since the entire content of the old website had to be migrated without exception, we did a content inventory afterwards.
    Based on this, we developed a new content architecture.
    The migration of content was mostly automated, a few parts had to be migrated manually.

    We continuously checked the quality of the software development and the website performance through automatic and manual tests. This also included the adherence to HTML-standards and the demand for lack of restrictions (according to BITV).

    In order to ensure that the navigational structure and the website surface were user-friendly, we conducted usability tests (speak-out-load method).

    On the client’s request we established an agile project management. This not only affected software development , but also conceptual design. In accordance to “Lean UX”, we incrementally developed the conceptual design in an iterative process.

    Simon-Kucher & Partners is a global strategy consulting company with 29 locations worldwide.
    We took over the existing corporate site and have ever since been aiding the customer with maintenance and support, bug fixing, development, security improvements and performance optimizations.
    We offer consultation in the area of search engine optimization and support for Google Adwords campaigns.

    Since the consultancy is active worldwide, the multilingualism of its website is a crucial challenge. Currently content is offered in 12 languages.
    Also, it was important to take the different legal requirements in the different countries into consideration. In Great Britain, Italy, Poland, Portugal and Spain site providers are required to allow the user to refuse the use of cookies. We implemented a suitable solution to the relevant country subsites.

    DHL Inhouse Consulting uses MediaWiki as the basis of its internal knowledge management platform.
    We support the client in the operation of the platform with updates, error management, advancements and performance optimizations.
    In order to provide the platform with an integrated full-text search, in which both Mediawiki internal and external files are indexed, we developed a sophisticated component-based on Apache Solr and Apache Tika.

    Noteworthy aspects:
    We designed and developed a sophisticated search function, which not only indexes the contents of the knowledge management platform, but also documents, which can also be stored outside and within the platform.
    Thus, this gives the user an opportunity to browse through a search of all relevant content in full text.

    They can narrow the search by using facet filters (author, publication date, file format, category etc.). A fuzzy search is also possible through the use of wildcards.
    This allows us to make the very comprehensive content of the platform easily accessible.

    Project:
    "Postbank SELECT" is a premium offering for customers of Deutsche Postbank AG. Selected

    In this project it was necessary to meet stringent safety requirements. This includes encrypted data transfer on all sides and a special registration process.
    A visual and functional quality customer approach also was the focus of the project.

    Data in Transit implemented the project in 2008. Ever since, we have been in charge of development and support. In 2010 we migrated the site to Drupal 6. In 2012, we updated the appearance to mirror the new design of the Postbank online banking and implemented new features.

    The customized editing environment allows for content to be generated in a straightforward and corporate design-compliant manner and published after release.

    We developed scalable solutions for regular import of the data of more than 1 million SELECT customers.

    The site successfully passed external security audits.


    For this project it was very important that the editors produced and created corporate design-compliant texts.
    We designed and developed specifications, which we implemented in an editorial kit.

    The Federal Agency for Nature Conservation is planning a relaunch of its multi-lingual website BfN.de.
    We consult the Agency with the aim of establishing a new information architecture which presents the extensive range of services and offerings in a modern way and conveys the content clearly, in a networked and needs-oriented manner. An important part of the design work is to review the results in periodic user tests.

    Methods, tools and technologies used:
    As the first step, we performed an heuristic analysis (expert review) of the current site www.bfn.de. The findings were supplemented by the evaluation of usage statistics.
    With representatives of the client, we compiled objectives and target groups of the new website in workshops, as well as functional and non-functional requirements.
    In usability labs we interviewed representatives of the target groups about their expectations for the BfN site and conducted usability tests.
    On this basis, we developed Personas and User Journeys.
    We had discussions with representatives of all the departments to ascertain their requirements for the new information architecture.

    On the basis of these work results we developed the new information architecture for the BfN site. We visualized the conceptual proposals in an interactive prototype or “Clickdummy" (Axure-based) and provided an extensive and detailed sitemap table. The table makes statements about the new arrangement of existing content, and justifies the elimination of outdated or irrelevant content.

    To improve the content quality and the structuring of the subject matter areas, we outlined the most important anti-patterns of the current structure and drafted a content strategy.

    The design is completed by a search concept, navigation options for mobile devices, proposals for an open data strategy and guidelines for better writing on the Web.

    PROJECT DETAILS
    The Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig (ZFMK) is one of the largest natural history research museums in Germany.
    The relaunch based on the Open Source CMS Drupal aimed at fundamentally revising the site both visually and structurally fundamentally. Together with the museum, we designed the information architecture and the new look and feel.
    The new look is characterized by a visually attractive frontend, an equally customizable as well as user-friendly content management system and numerous possibilities for interconnecting content.
    Accessibility is a given. We developed special automated and other tests to check the markups on W3C compliance for this purpose.

    Museum Koenig uses an iOS app on iPods as an audio guide. The app also provides current information, which is retrieved via an interface off the website and included in the app.

    The research exhibition at Museum Koenig shows the global research activities of the in-house scientists. The world map projected on a horizontal canvas provides animated information on the individual projects. This information comes from the project data on the website. The software for the exhibit was also developed by Data in Transit.

    METHODS, TOOLS, TECHNOLOGIES:
    In a basic concept the following topics were defined in cooperation with the client:
    objectives , target groups, desired appearance of the website, "market" or context , functionalities.
    Finally, we developed an information architecture that aimed at meeting the objectives of the site and of the target groups and their needs. An heuristic analysis (expert review), evaluations of the web statistics of the old site, workshops with the client and a content inventory served as the framework.
    On this basis, we developed an action plan on the subjects of navigation, search and designation systems.
    We then converted this into an information architecture, wireframes, navigation options, and proposals for a user-friendly, consistent wording.

    Project:
    In 2012 we developed an internal knowledge management and collaboration tool for the German Telekom AG. The aim was to standardize and communicate the methodology for usability engineering and user experience across all countries of the sites of NatCos (national companies). The establishment of a transnational division for standardizing eCommerce platforms, e-commerce processes and UX methodology was to be supported.
    Sophisticated search technologies based on Apache Solr, as well as particularly easy and convenient-to-use user interfaces are at the center of this project. Using Apache Tika, we also incorporated a full text search of the uploaded documents.
    In order to quickly inspect documents, we developed preview images for all file formats (video, audio, Office, PDF). We converted the uploaded documents into suitable preview formats for that purpose.

    The challenge of this project was that there was both extensive content on the pages of the portal, as well as documents and media files (PDF, Office, Audio, Video) on various topics.
    We designed and implemented presentation formats which enable the user to quickly switch between the contents page and a summary list and preview options on the associated files.
    Efficient search by facet filters, including full-text search of the documents, also was an important component of the project.

    "Mein! KI.KA" is the community of the children's channel of ARD and ZDF (KI.KA). It provides a safe environment for a child’s first experience with social networks. All contributions of children are proofread before publication.
    Objectives of the platform: To lead children to a self-confident and competent use of media, to extend the TV programs effectiveness beyond the broadcast date, and in addition to generate community / user-generated content for TV shows.

    The issues of security and data protection were paramount in the implementation of the project in spring of 2009. Data in Transit designed solutions for the complex requirements of the registration procedure and developed workflows and tools to support the moderation process.

    All user-generated content is proofread before its release by an "moderation" team and then either released or rejected. As a consequence, user-friendly and clear surfaces and tools have been provided in order to carry out this work quickly and efficiently.

    Security and performance of the site were confirmed by external penetration and load tests. An accessibility implementation evidently was a requirement, which we will gladly fulfilled.

    With more than 30,000 users and more than 300,000 user-generated contents the platform continues to be stable, safe and successful. The community has been relaunched in 2014 and replaced by another application.
