In our new report Shifting Patterns – the future of the logistics industry, we discuss four key areas of disruption -- changing customer expectations, technology breakthroughs, new entrants to the industry and collaboration – that will change how logistics will operate in the next years to come.
PwC Strategy& has identified four logistics scenarios exploring possible futures of the industry. In each, digital technology plays a pivotal role but affects the market differently. In two scenarios, new entrants are the primary driver, while in the remaining two, the incumbents remain dominant.
The winners in this race for transformation will be those who best understand and exploit a range of new technologies from data analytics to automation and platform solutions – those who don’t will be the losers and risk obsolescence.

    PwC Strategy&

  • A Recipe for Airline Success - Using Technology to Capture Essential Gains in Airline Productivity

    Booz & Company

Over the past 30 years, profitability in the airline industry has rarely exceeded the average cost of capital employed despite steady increases in passenger traffic and destinations. In the coming years, it is likely that airline profits will be throttled further by the global economic downturn, high fuel costs, and the prospect of ever more stringent environmental regulations. In order to survive and prosper in these conditions, airlines must rationalize their processes and increase asset utilization to a greater degree than ever before. This will require business-driven IT transformation—that is, the fundamental redesign and integration of business systems and processes within and across airline functions. Accomplishing this task will not be easy. Airlines will have to carefully manage the internal demand for IT services, implement project delivery methodologies that focus on business process design and change management, and adopt a sourcing strategy that enables them to match suppliers to project goals on the basis of the capabilities and degree of collaboration
required. Those that do will be able to significantly raise their business performance and earn improved returns on their IT
    investments.

Now that the hype stage is over, it is time for every CIO to take a serious look at cloud computing—what it offers today, and what it will offer in the long term. Travel companies are missing opportunities by failing to learn as much as possible about their customers. Indeed, success in the travel industry in the coming years will be defined by a keen understanding of customer habits and tastes and by an ability to tailor products, services, and channel strategies to highly differentiated, carefully delineated consumer segments — whether high-touch service seekers, online power shoppers, holiday traditionalists, or bargain hunters.

The number of people who consult online customer reviews and check travel blogs before making their buying decision has increased significantly over the past years. At the same time, brand loyalty has fallen quickly―leading to an ever increasing fight for the end-consumer by all players in the global travel distribution market. Still, traditional retail travel agents and tour operators account for the majority of sales, but online travel agencies (OTAs), such as Priceline and Expedia continue to grow fast and are gaining market share. This viewpoint explores the different dynamics affecting the travel industry through the advance of digital technologies and changed consumer behaviour.

    Strategy & Business

Despite excitement over RFID technology and its future promise, most companies currently lack a business case to adopt it anytime soon. While closed loop applications have a reasonable investment case, the challenge is to make the technology applicable to open loop applications like the CPG/Retail industry is currently piloting it.
