🌱 The activity of #Plants that carry out photosynthesis, i.e. produce oxygen and sugar from carbon dioxide, water and sunlight, can be observed through #Fluorescence: The more actively a plant converts these substances, the more it glows in certain areas of the light spectrum. ☀ This allows conclusions to be drawn about how healthy plants are, for example, whether they are receiving sufficient water and nutrients. 🛩 A new sensor for measuring fluorescence is currently being tested in flight operations in order to validate satellite data at a later stage. A helicopter-towed probe from #TUBraunschweig, which is collecting data on test flights together with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), is being used for this purpose. From a height of several hundred metres, the device looks down on the ground and records the fluorescence. 🛰 The testing is taking place as part of the Fluorescence Explorer satellite mission of the European Space Agency - ESA, which will provide new insights into the photosynthesis of vegetation from 2026. 👀 Checkup: Recycling Battery Production in the EU 🔋 As part of the Research Training Group CircularLIB, TU scientists from the Institute of Automotive Management and Industrial Production (AIP) - Production and Logistics and the Institute of Machine Tools and Production Technology (IWF) have examined the circular production of lithium-ion batteries in the European Union. The results show that the required recycling targets of the #EUBatteryRegulation are very ambitious, depending on market developments, and thus pose enormous challenges for the #BatteryIndustry. According to their analyses, the predicted amount of used batteries will not be sufficient to meet the targets for recycled materials - simply because of the long lifetime of batteries. They also found that production waste from battery manufacturing will be the main source of secondary materials until 2035, before significant quantities of end-of-life batteries become available. #TUBraunschweig submits follow-up applications for two clusters of excellence ✨ Since 2019, the two research projects SE²A - Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Aviation and QuantumFrontiers at TU Braunschweig have been funded as part of the #ExcellenceStrategy of the German state and federal governments. On 22 August, both clusters submitted follow-up applications to secure continued funding for another seven years. ✈ The #SE²A cluster has been working to create the scientific and technological basis for sustainable aviation. The goals are to drastically reduce energy consumption and emissions from aircraft, reduce noise pollution, develop tailor-made air traffic management and conduct a holistic assessment of resource consumption and climate impact. 🔬 #QuantumFrontiers cluster aims to perform measurements at the quantum frontier with unprecedented precision. The aim is to expand the horizons of knowledge in fundamental physics and geodesy and to open up new applications. The cluster also promotes interdisciplinary dialogue between physics, engineering, computer science, social sciences and education, and takes into account the social and educational aspects of quantum technology. ❄️ #Permafrost research in the Canadian Arctic Professor Antje Schwalb and PhD student Emma Cameron from the Institute of Geosystems and Bioindication at #TUBraunschweig are on an expedition to the Northwest Territories in #Canada 🇨🇦 to investigate the dangers posed by industrial contaminants in the permafrost ❄️. Together with other researchers, they are investigating the drilling mud pits in the Mackenzie Delta, where residues from oil and gas exploration are stored 🛢️. 🌍 Thousands of sites in the #Arctic permafrost contain industrial waste, some of it highly toxic ☠️. These threaten to endanger ecosystems and local populations as the permafrost thaws deeper and becomes unstable due to the massive warming of the Arctic. 💧 The sub-project of TU Braunschweig is focusing on the effects of #ClimateChange and possible leakage of drilling fluids on local water #ecosystems. The aim of Professor Antje Schwalb and Emma Cameron is to determine the regional extent of these changes, identify highly endangered species and designate particularly vulnerable areas by analysing water and sediment samples 🧪. ℹ The expedition is part of the joint project "ThinIce" (Thawing industrial legacies in the Arctic - a threat to permafrost ecosystems), led by the Alfred-Wegener-Institut, Helmholtz-Zentrum für Polar- und Meeresforschung and involving TU Braunschweig, Leibniz Universität Hannover and RWTH Aachen University. Second place for students at #DLRDesignChallenge! 😎 ✈ For the first time, a team of students from #TUBraunschweig took part in the annual DLR Design Challenge. Six students of aeronautics, astronautics and sustainable energy technology independently developed a futuristic, sustainable and economical short-haul aircraft for market entry in 2050. On 8 August 2024, they presented their design for a (hybrid) electric aircraft called "VoltAirs-95" at the Centre for Applied Aviation Research (ZAL) in Hamburg. 🔋 The design is a (hybrid) electric aircraft with a capacity of 95 passengers and a range of around 900 kilometres. For extra-long missions and possible reserve flights, the aircraft has a range extender on board that can run on sustainable aviation fuel. The aircraft also benefits from improved aerodynamics by combining a high aspect ratio wing with a V-tail. The passenger experience is enhanced by virtual windows and a significantly quieter cabin.
