GFG-Garage Reopens
The GFG mbH has been in the market as an independent Mercedes G dealership since 2009. With the move into their own garage in Gotha, they ventured into new business areas. GFGs customers and sales vehicles are being cared at the new 3767 sq.ft. (350qm) garage near the Gotha main train station. Apart from offering maintenance work on the G, GFG has specialised in trading and restoring historic G models. So far GFG has already delivered a few restored Gs with historic classic car registration. A second main pillar is motorsports. Rally vehicles based on the G are built and maintained under the label G-Raid.

Mercedes G Team Wins the German Off Road Masters (GORM) Title
After winning the 24 hour race together with team Grnbeck / Dasinger, Frank Stensky and Stephan Stensky successfully defended their GORM title as well. After 2007 (Phillipp Baier G320 V6), 2008 (Jrg Hring 560GE) and 2009 (Frank Stensky G32 AMG) a G-model wins for the fourth time in a row. After a spectacular and tough final race at the German Rallyeraid Masters GORM, the Thuringian father-and-son duo Frank and Stephan Stensky were able to win the Overall Winner title again after 2009. The grand finals in the Northern German city of Schwerin were anything but easy. In the end, the team had to give it their everything to take the lead. The spectators were offered a nerve-wrecking and thrilling show and the Stenskys masterfully won the title with the new Mercedes G500 pickup. In the course of this, the Stenskys engaged in a breathtaking wheel-to-wheel duel with a Jeep Wrangler V8 Prototype. After the Jeep had lost its front axle on the track, the outcome of the race was clear. We would like to take he opportunity to congratulate the second place winners Jrg Grnbeck and Thomas Dasinger (G320 V6), who were dogged by bad luck, and team Mario Thaler, Christof Thaler (Vth G32), who won third place in the T1-class.

Qualittsmngel beim G

G-WAGEN 05
Heckleuchte die Stelle aller Stellen the G has been delighting its owners to the present day. While the G 300 turbo diesel and the 290GD turbo are running in a beautifully unobtrusive way, the G400 cdi has been a complete disaster from the very beginning. Never before has the effort to put an engine into a G been as extensive as with the V8 cdi engine. The frame and the steering had to be modified, the mighty engine with its two turbochargers just barely fit into the engine bay. The effort was not worth it with regards to the first G400s, they are extremely unreliable and repairs are so exorbitantly expensive that by now they can easily go beyond the vehicles value. As is the case with the 350GD, problems with the engines also occur in Mercedes S-class vehicles. With the extensive modifications that were made, the last model years seem to be mostly running without a problem but as soon as repairs are coming up they unfortunately are very costly in general; for example, the engine has to be removed in order to replace the starter.
The new ladder is has been exclusively designed by Karl Volger of G-wagenaccessories.com for the Mercedes Gelndewagen. The ladder is similar to the factory Mercedes PUR 30 ladder but attaches to the roof gutter and not to a specific roof rack.

The Libyan Sahara!
Why Libya? Desert rallies is what we love. North Africa is the shortest journey. But sometimes it feels like being an endangered animal: Our hunting grounds become smaller and smaller. Morocco with its Erg Chebi is easily accessible on asphalt road. So is Ksar Ghilane in Tunisia. If you want to avoid package tourists, we end up at restricted military areas. Permissions on doing rallies there are more and more difficult to get. How nice that there still is Libya! Libya Rally Raid is a long distance Rally. That means 5000 kilometres through the most beautiful sand dunes of North Africa. Lets take this opportunity as long as it exists! Merhabe, Welcome, to the country of boundless off road possibilities. Libya Rally Raid is a rally and tour event at the Libyan Sahara, already taking place for the fourth time. It is arranged by experienced, idealistic off roaders, who set their selves to bring the unbelievable beauty of the desert closer to everyone interested. Motor bikes, quads, off road cars and trucks can become part of Libya Rally Raid or get to know the desert in a guided group with Libya Adventure Raid. Taking part is possible with every standard off road vehicle. Only GPS has to be there. With Libya Rally Raid you get the possibility of getting to know the highest sand dunes, without carrying around disturbing burden water, foodstuffs and fuel is available everyday at camp and does not have to be transported in own vehicles. So this saves lots of shovelling and the investment in strengthened cassis, extra tanks and more, that you would have to do travelling alone or in a small group. So who always wanted to cross the endless seaming sand dunes of Sahara with their own vehicle, now doesnt have further excuse. We assume all about work and organization. You just have to pack your vehicle, charge your camera batteries and off you go. Landscapes are stunning, people friendly and every night at camp you have the possibility to share experiences at bonfire. Libyan landscapes are huge and the dunes high, inviting you to dune surf. Rally participants navigate with road book and GPS and have to have a satellite telephone for safety reasons. Adventure Raid participants travel in a guided group. Rally regulations are designed similar to FIA standards but simplified for amateurs. Libya Rally Raid is organized by a team of international experienced off roaders many took part at rallies and trophies with great success themselves, so the event will be run smoothly. You will spend the nights in own tents or vehicles, right in the desert. Apart from outdoor cooks, who provide the catering for the whole trip, we also provide three teams of emergency doctors and a team of technical service with their own, changed over off road cars and trucks. If a vehicle gets stuck on the route, it gets towed away to camp by the truck provided. The latest satellite and navigation techniques will guarantee every participants safety. Repairs on vehicles can be made at night at camp by 3 garage mechanics and a chief mechanic with their garage truck at fair prices.

SAM Mercedes Rally Raid Car based on the M-Class
In the rally raid sport there is a huge gap between the factory cars (VW Race Touareg, BMW X3 CC and Hummer H3) that are developed with a lot of money and high tech with regards to engine and suspension technology and the private teams who are driving rather conventional rigid-axle cars such as the Bowler Wildcat based on the Land Rover Defender. Accordingly, the gaps are rather large; predictably, the VW Race Touareg finished first at the Silk Way Rally and the BMW X3 CC at the Morocco Rally, often with a lead of several hours over the first independent teams. Since the factory cars can only be purchased for an astronomical amount close to seven digits, if they can be purchased at all, the private teams mostly have to decide between driving behind the field or to lease-in with the factory team at high price. On paper, there have been a few attempts at bringing fast rallye-raid vehicles with independent wheel suspension for customer teams into the sport. However, this has not been crowned with success yet; the Mc Rae Evo failed just as the Bowler Nemesis. So far, nobody has raised the development costs necessary for a successful vehicle so that the vehicles turned out to be rather bad attempts at building a rally car. Sven Knorr from Plauen is an avid rally driver and successful entrepeneur; he is behind the new project SAM Mercedes. He is the first who commissioned the systematic development of a pure-bred rally-raid vehicle, entirely without factory support. The Rally Mercedes ML is a racing machine through and through; only the engine, lights and windscreen were taken from the M-Class, everything else is pure motorsports technology. Since optimisation of the Mercedes V6 cdi turbo-diesel engine would have been by far too expensive, it was decided to use a petrol engine from the Daimler shelves. With the 35 mm Airrestrictor required by FIA, the 3.5 litre V6 24V
20
G-WAGEN 05
Mercedes engine, optimised by Breuer Technical Development, reaches 300 hp and 350 Nm. In combination with the sequential Sadev six-speed transmission the Rally ML reaches a maximum speed of 125 mph. It accelerates from 0-62 mph in under 7 seconds these are decent figures for a rally-raid vehicle. Just as with the X-Raid BMW X3, the Dutch company Reiger took over an in the off-road sector extremely important part: the suspension. As required by the FIA, the vehicle has a kerb weight of 3858 pounds and
9.8 inches wheel travel. The robust Heggemann tubular-frame chassis with integrated FIA-conform rollover cage forms the backbone of the car. Wimmer Carbontechnik built the extremely lightweight body in a Mercedes look, weighing just 168 pounds. Hans Gtz Engineering in Wolnzach brought all components together and did the most crucial development work for the new vehicle. Schrter Formenbau in Oberpframmern gave the rally bolide its design and form. The company 2D Debus & Diebold
Messsysteme from Karlsruhe dedicated itself to all of the automotive electronics, delivered measurement technology and analysed the measurement results. The German rally champion Matthias Kahle was responsible for generating the measurement results. He already moved the ML 35 CC during test drives and during its first appearance at the Baja Hungary, where the vehicle unfortunately broke down due to damaged steering. Sven Knorr spared neither trouble
nor expense to turn his vision of a really innovative vehicle into reality. His goals are very ambitious, the ML 35 CC shall be good for a place on the podium at the Dakar Rally. At a net price of 450,000 the car would be a bargain offer if it should meet these expectations.

Eurosatory 2010

at least visually. A major improvement is the underfloor protection against mines and booby traps. The vehicle is safer but that clearly shows. This holds even more true for the is new LAPV 6 which weighs more that 6 tons and was presented in Paris as a movable concept car. Compared to the LAPV 5, the most noticeable changes are to be found in the chassis. The vehicle got bolt-on portals and
massive suspension struts that were painted in a trendy fashion. Seeing this strong presence, there is one question that needs asking: Why was the most successful innovation with regards to the G missing in Paris? Even though other military forces besides the Australian forces might well be interested in this vehicle, the G300 cdi 6X6 wasnt exhibited, We were equally puzzled by the complete absence of the new G300
cdi Professional, geared towards utility car users, at the utility-car trade show IAA in Hannover. It almost seems as if one wouldnt seriously want to sell the car. At Daimler you can find everything an army needs for mobility - from a cross-country vehicle to the heavy 8x8 truck. Hence there were many heavy vehicles with the star to be admired besides the Gs.
A relative of the G with Unimog chassis presented itself with portal axles and G interior. It is a visually slightly oversized G powered by the G300 cdi three litre V6 turbo-diesel engine. Also worth seeing is the Unimog 6x6 as well as different military trucks including armoured Actros and Zetros models.

G-Class production in Graz
The two greatest export hits from Graz? No doubt about it: Mr. Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger and the G-class! Of course their paths did meet: Mr. I will be back! owns a G36 AMG Cabrio. Visiting the sacred halls in Graz leaves every G-class fan awestruck. The highlight of the production stages that are open to the public is the wedding where chassis and body are being married. Rationally speaking, today the G is built here just like it was in 1979. The percentage of work that is done by hand is as high as with no other vehicle in the Daimler group. Even worldwide you will hardly find another serial production car that is produced with a similar large amount of work done by hand. To describe the Gs production process with the recently inflationarily-used term manufactory does not illuminate all aspects that can be marvelled at in Graz. Whilst manufactory does apply to the production of the G with regards to the love to details and the use of the finest, goodsmelling leather and beautiful precious wood, a large part of the process is rather reminiscent of bygone times of heavy industry production. The construction of the frame for example reminds one of railroad manufacturing at Krupp in Essen around the turn of the century. On the other hand there is a stark contrast: the installation of modern vehicle electronics with wiring harnesses that are thick as an arm and that rather resembles computer manufacturing in Silicon Valley. Therefore, visiting the G-class production is also a fascinating time travel through the advancement of automobile manufacture. Work that is done by hand does have its price, the cost of a G doesnt come out of the blue. Even if there is at times a slightly greater need for rework when compared to mechanized production, manual labour has two indisputable advantages: You can individually react to customers wishes and the quality and status values are on the highest level. Whereas these advantages are currently almost going unheeded by Daimler; there is potential here that lies idle. Especially the status value of manual production has so far been hardly or insufficiently appreciated. While Volkswagen promotes the manual production of the extremely unsuccessful Phaethon in the Glserne Manufaktur (the transparent factory) in Dresden with great effort und exploits this fact for PR purposes, nothing of that sort is happening in Graz - unfortunately. The G350 cdi Bluetec that meets the EU emission standard Euro5 with Adblue was presented as the final stage of the G. Innovations around the G remain exciting; there are rumours about the installation of the petrol-thrifty 250cdi 4-cylinder twin-turbo engine that will power the S-class (S250 cdi) as of 2011. Engineering petrol engines for ethanol (e85) as we see in many US off-road vehicles would be a simple and very desirable innovation to reduce the environmental impact and improve the economic efficiency of the G-class. For over 30 years now G-models have left the grounds in Graz Tondorf day by day, up to 12,100 units (1990) per year, on average 7,500 units per year. The most diverse vehicles are coming off the same production line one behind the other, first a G300 military, then a G55 AMG followed by a G500 Cabrio. Only through the individually tailored production and their share of military contracts the G was able to survive over the years. The G is a mixed calculation between luxury SUV and military hardcore off-road vehicle - it has both genes. Or as BBC put it in the Top Gear TV test: With the G you are dressed to the occasion - anywhere and anytime; the car is a Swiss army knife, it is the coolest car in the world! There really isnt anything further that needs saying!
