David Wain and Michael Showalter wanted everything to be just right for Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp. This meant bringing in the same adult actors they worked with, along with the same composer. Craig Wedren was in charge of the music for the WHAS movie – including writing “Higher and Higher” – and the eight-episode prequel miniseries. For the show, the former Shudder To Think frontman wanted to create something new, but that also shared sounds with the movie. “We wanted there to be new score that had the feel of the original score, and in certain instances, like the Gene/Jonas (Christopher Meloni) scenes, we incorporated bits of the original score,” the musician told the A.V. Club. “But we knew we were going to need whole new worlds like with The Falcon (Jon Hamm) and a lot of the action stuff in the show that was something completely different.” In the end, most of what made the cut was inspired by the very same music – Queen, Blondie, the Pretenders – that Wedren and Wain listened to while attending summer camp together in Maine in the early ‘80s.
