And so the battle between Leah Remini and Scientology continues. The former King of Queens star appeared on Conan last night to promote her headline-grabbing docu-series, Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath as part of her press tour. Scientology is not having any of this, and they let the world know by sending Conan O’Brien a disapproving letter,, which the late night host almost immediately shared with his viewers. That’ll show ‘em.
Scientology and the Aftermath is a nine part docu-series filled with interviews from former members of the organization exposing the dark side of the church. Lemini, who has been an outspoken opponent of the organization for years now, created the series to give members a chance to tell their stories. The series has accused the organization of several dark things, but A&E has included statements from the church to make the show more balanced (and likely to protect the network from legal action). Prior to Remini’s appearance on Conan, the late night host was sent a letter he has never received before, attacking Remini’s character. I’ll let Conan and Remini take it away:

CONAN O’BRIEN: I can’t recall this ever happening — Jeff, I don’t know if you can recall this ever happening — but we were contacted by the Church of Scientology today.

LEAH REMINI: Sure

CONAN O’BRIEN: They sent us a statement. They’re obviously not happy that you’re on the show, and they said in their statement that Leah Remini is doing this because she wants the fame, she wants the money, she wants the attention. And I was thinking to myself today that’s very strange because I don’t think I’ve had a document sent to me like that before, and I’ve been doing this almost 24 years.
The rest of the 14-minute interview dives into Remini’s personal experience with the organization, specifically how the actress was able to go through the world through so long believing the church. Remini detailed Scientology’s confusing relationship with the media, which is always interesting. If you can’t get enough of people accusing Scientology of unfathomable horrors, I highly recommend it. You can watch Remini’s Conan interview here.
