It takes a special kind of actor to take an iconic role from over three decades ago and make it her own. So we would be completely out of our minds if we didn’t stop to honor DeWanda Wise as this week’s Woman Crush Wednesday.

WHO’S THAT GAL: DeWanda Wise

WHY WE’RE CRUSHING: Nola Darling is a significant film character, especially for her time. When the original 1986 Spike Lee Joint She’s Gotta Have It premiered, a woman who was casually dating three different men (and sometimes a woman) was an eye-widening concept. In 2017, DeWanda has picked her up, dusted her off (not that she needed much sprucing) and has totally made the character her own. She’s kept the confidence, added a dash of vulnerability and millennial concerns, and rocks a total enviable wardrobe as the Brooklynite artist in the new Netflix series.

DeWanda sparkles as the star of the show. You’ll love watching her paint and go on dates and engage in fun yet important convos with her gal pals. She’s able to handle the serious scenes with the same conviction as the lighter, bubblier moments. While she seamlessly becomes Nola, you’ll also consciously realize what a perfect match the actress is for the character here.

WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: After studying at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and the Atlantic Theatre Company Acting School, DeWanda got her start in theater and a handful of short films, then landing roles in shows such as The Good Wife, Boardwalk Empire, and The Mentalist. But people really started to take note earlier this year when she appeared as Clara in Underground, and in the Fox drama series Shots Fired as Shameeka Campbell. So at this point, she might look familiar to you, but by the end of the year (or really, the end of this weekend), she’ll be one of your faves.

WHERE YOU’LL SEE HER AGAIN: Presumably, you’ll be firing up your Netflix exactly when She’s Gotta Have It premieres this Thanksgiving Day! If you start early enough, you might even be able to binge all 10 episodes before you sit down for your turkey dinner. One thing is for certain though: this woman, she already has it.
