Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

There are SO many reasons why Home Alone 2 is inferior to the original Home Alone. It’s set in New York City and yet is 90% set in either a) a hotel room, b) the set of a mid-renovation townhouse that could be anywhere, or c) a fakey-fake knockoff of FAO Schwartz, which all but negates the whole concept of being lost in New York. It’s also set at Christmas instead of Thanksgiving, even though sequels are supposed to be a progression from the original (should be a new holiday!) and how wild would it have been for Kevin to have been lost amid the parade?? Also everything with the family is weak sauce, and Rob Schneider is prominently involved.

But if you ask the movie’s star Macaulay Culkin, he’ll give you one very timely reason why Home Alone 2 is inferior: it had Donald Trump in it.

When asked in a recent Reddit AMA about which Home Alone movie he liked the best, Culkin responded thusly:

“The first one was more fun because we didnt know what we were walking into and it was a lot less flying all over the place; it was all in Chicago. Also it had %100 less Trump.”

Trump made a cameo in Home Alone 2 as himself, giving Kevin directions to the lobby of the Plaza Hotel, which Trump owned at the time. It’s a cheesy scene in a mostly cheesy movie (though respect to Brenda Fricker as the bird lady and to Tim Curry and Dana Ivey for always), but it really ties Trump to that film’s legacy like an anchor.
