Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

It’s been almost 25 years since the first Jumanji stampeded into theaters, and the action-packed sequel more than makes up for lost time by upping the stakes and updating the core concept. Instead of a board game, this time around four kids are dropped into an old school video game scenario complete with larger-than-life avatars (Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, and Kevin Hart). This film was–and still is–a major box office player, pulling in almost a billion dollars worldwide. That’s a huge accomplishment made even huger when you realize there isn’t a Jedi or Avenger anywhere near this movie! You can either go see this in a theater near you right now, or you can purchase the film digitally (it’ll be available to rent on March 20).

Downsizing

This is a weird one, a film that definitely suffered from faulty advertising. The film looks like a quirky dramedy about a man (Matt Damon) who chooses to “downsize” in order to restart his life (it’s a lot cheaper to live small, apparently!). It’s high-concept sci-fi mixed with a midlife crisis, subject matter that seems perfect for director Alexander Payne. Instead, though, the movie is apparently way darker than advertised, and gets into some tricky ethical territory that Payne either does or doesn’t handle well. You be the judge, just so long as you remember not to judge Downsizing by its trailer. And if you don’t want to roll the dice with a movie paying full price, you’ll be able to rent Downsizing on March 20.

Cool World

Listen: I’m not here to front like Cool World is a good movie. By all accounts, it is terrible. But here’s what it has going for it: it’s from 1992, a time period that you are most likely nostalgic for if you were born in the ’80s or before; it features animation from cult favorite animation director Ralph Bakshi, the brain behind the 1978 animated Lord of the Rings feature; and Cool World stars a post-Thelma & Louise / pre-Interview with the Vampire Brad Pitt, meaning this is some primo Pitt that you probably haven’t seen in a while, if ever. What’s it about? It’s a film noir riff on Who Framed Roger Rabbitthat’s kinda all over the map, but again: nostalgia, Bakshi, Brad. That’s worth $0.99, isn’t it?
