Every week on the New Movies On Demand post, I chart the progress of the weather as 2018 passes week by week. And for seemingly the last forever, I’ve been waiting for winter to end. But winter will not end. No, all those fun spring activities will soon be pushed to the summer, as dreary, icy weather seems to be going nowhere. So what else are you going to do? You’re not going to a baseball game when it’s freezing outside (or at least I’m not!). Stay inside, movies are your friend right now! Whether you use Amazon VideoiTunesVudu or your cable’s on demand service, there are always a lot of new releases out there waiting for you to discover!

Looking to warm up via the adrenaline released during intense horror flicks? Then set aside a few dollars because Insidious: The Last Key is now available to rent! The fourth film in the Insidious franchise was a surprise hit worldwide, proving that the series can still deliver scares when it’s focused on Lin Shaye’s psychic character. Maybe horror isn’t your bag, though. Good news: the Owen Wilson and Ed Helms comedy Father Figures is also available to rent. Watch as two brothers search the country for their biological father, finding unlikely candidates in the form of J.K. Simmons, Terry Bradshaw, and Christopher Walken.

What else can you buy or rent this week? Find out by taking a look at the collection of thrillers, intense documentaries, and Oscar nominees now available for you to enjoy from the comfort of your very own home!

The Commuter

Liam Neeson’s late-career action turn results in thriller after thriller, so many that “Taken on a ____” is its own subgenre. The Commuter is essentially “Taken on a train,” at least it starts on a train. Neeson plays an ex-cop who gets entangled in a dangerous murder plot after a run-in with a mystery woman on–wait for it–his daily commute. Vera Farmiga stars as the mysterious woman, and if you’re anything like me, then you need to know that Sam Neill has a small role as a police captain.

The Post

While Steven Spielberg’s current blockbuster Ready Player One is taking over movie theaters, you can now watch his previous, noticeably quieter film The Post at home. The Oscar-nominated drama takes a close, tense look at The Washington Post’s role in exposing the presidency-ending Watergate scandal. Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks head up a stacked cast including Bob Odenkirk, Alison Brie, Bradley Whitford and a million more. The film had a super quick turnaround (it was released in theaters just 7 months after filming started!) because Spielberg felt that the story of newspapers trying to expose massive corruption in the White House was… you know… timely.

This acclaimed comedy/drama from former SNL head writer Chris Kelly tells the emotional story of a son (Jesse Plemons) returning home to take care of his dying mother (Molly Shannon). If you need to be convinced to watch this, let my co-workers Meghan O’Keefe, Josh Sorokach, Lea Palmieri, and Joe Reid sell you on it. Seriously, we love this movie! If you have Netflix, you’re in luck! You can stream this right now (as long as you’re emotionally prepared for a good cry). If not, you can now rent it in iTunes for $0.99.
