Netflix‘s French miniseries The Chalet is full of surprises; from the twisty layering of timelines to the morally ambiguous characters, you never quite know what you’re going to get from scene-to-scene. Set at a remote chalet in the French Alps, the series gets off to a slow start, but it becomes quickly apparent that this gorgeous, idyllic setting is haunted by something sinister. What begins as an intriguing take on the cabin in the woods premise escalates to a truly terrifying place, and by the end, you may find yourself completely reassessing your next vacation plans.

If (like us), you blew through the series’ six episodes in record time and still have some lingering questions, we are here to help. Who lives and who dies? Why were these people terrorized? What are the big, darkest secrets? Here is what happened at the end of Netflix’s The Chalet, explained to the best of our ability.

What was Adèle’s deal?

The pregnant fiancée of Manu gave us our first hint that something might be off when she hallucinated blood coming up through the floorboards in the first episode, and by the end, it’s pretty clear that Adele is little Amélie Rodier, all grown up and out for revenge.

What was Sébastien guilty of?

From the very beginning, Sébastien was setup to be some kind of fall guy for it all; we first meet him while he’s being interrogated, find out he was accused of sexual harassment in the past and his accuser went missing, and his overall asshole tendencies (from past and present) certainly don’t help his case. Sébastien’s obsession with Alice – and subsequent rape of her and deluded belief that they are together – is indicative of his history of instability and psychological issues. He was a creep, bully, and misogynist, but never quite got into serial killing the way other characters did.

What happened to the Rodiers?

After the villagers discovered that the Rodiers had a winning lottery ticket for a hefty sum (gifted to Jean-Louis from Muriel), they killed them – but the children were able to escape. Since then, Amélie and Julien have lived their lives under different names, plotting revenge for this very trip to the chalet.

Who died on The Chalet?

The first death we see is Paul’s, who is lured by Amélie’s teddy bear and dragged behind a car. Then goes Gaspard, the man who is tied up beneath the bridge and winds up crushed by the rockfall. Married couple Erika and Thierry are both killed, Laurent dies from his bear trap wounds, Etienne kills Christine, and Tiphaine commits suicide by sleeping pills. Sébastien abducts and murders Fabio, believing Fabio and Maud must be the Rodiers, and Amélie and Julien wind up killing Etienne. We’re sure we’re missing a few. There are too many bodies to count.

What happened at the end of The Chalet?

Amélie and Julien decide to frame Sébastien for all of the murders, having set up the perfect amount of evidence and knowing that his instability will surely point to his guilt. They convince the remaining living characters to join them for the plot, and when we last see Sébastien, it’s implied that he’ll be committed to a psychiatric institution. Amélie and Julien escape, having done exactly what they set out to do.
