Video footage of Cops sound supervisor Bryce Dion getting shot and killed in the middle of a shootout at a Wendy’s in Omaha, Nebraska, in 2014 was presented in court and made public this week. The video shows police officers — accompanied by a camera operator and sound technician — running into the Wendy’s, where a robbery was taking place, and firing repeatedly at the suspect. Dion, age 38, is then seen knocked to the ground at the door.

Cops was filming in Omaha back in 2014 when a call came in about a robbery in progress at a Wendy’s restaurant. The police car with Cops crew in tow showed up, and almost immediately upon entering, shots are repeatedly fired. In the aftermath, Bryce Dion is shown slumped to the floor, having barely entered the vestibule. Dion was wearing a bullet-proof vest at the time, but the bullet reportedly entered at an unprotected place below his left armpit.

Dion died of his injuries, as did the robber, 32-year-old Cortez Washington, who was later revealed to have bee wielding a realistic-looking pellet gun.

Bryce Dion’s brother, Trevor Dion, filed a wrongful death suit against the Omaha PD for negligence in the death of his brother. The suit claims that Bryce Dion was acting in accordance with the police officers’ instructions when he was shot.

The video was a contentious piece of evidence for both the trial and for the Cops TV show. The City of Omaha tried to block its release, but a judge ordered that it be shown. Dion’s death was the first of a crew member since the show began airing in 1989. The video was played in court on Tuesday
