Here’s What’s Up with Every ‘American Horror Story’ Season in ‘Apocalypse’

American Horror Story‘s universe has always been creepy, but it’s about to get a whole lot creepier. This fall marks the premiere of AHS: Apocalypse, the first official crossover season in this anthology series. But Apocalypse is remarkable for something over than combining the characters of Murder House and Coven into one twisting tale of madness. This season actually takes place during the end of the world. Well, “our” world.

That’s right — the apocalypse in Season 8’s namesake isn’t a metaphor. This upcoming season is really about the end of times. And it turns out that the birth of the antichrist isn’t something that just affects the complicated characters of Season 1 and Season 3. All the seasons of American Horror Story may be suffering.

Over the past week, the official American Horror Story Twitter account has been releasing GIFs of iconic AHS locations covered in flames, much like you would expect if the world really was to end in a fiery uprising of the antichrist. Here’s the Harmon family home from Murder House smoldering. And though Freak Show‘s carnival is in flames, Elsa Mars (Jessica Lange) could probably still turn a profit:

If it’s possible for Hotel Cortez from Season 5 to look any creepier, that’s happening. Even Cult is represented in the madness, though its GIF is a bit more abstract and Manson-esque:

Briarcliff Manor from Asylum isn’t accepting any new patients. And though we know that our favorite Coven witches are safe, but Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies may not be:

And you know Roanoke is in the middle of another tragedy:

If we were talking about any other show, this could be written off as a cool but likely meaningless marketing tactic. But this is American Horror Story, a show that has spent eight seasons winking at the fact that all of its stories are in some way connected. If that’s true, which is something that show creator Ryan Murphy alluded to last year, there’s a chance that the apocalypse will affect all seasons of the show.

This isn’t a completely insane theory as American Horror Story has a history of making semi-canonical marketing materials. Tied to the premiere of Murder House, FX released the interactive website and short story You’re Going to Die in There, which elaborated on some dark stories that were only hinted at during Season 1. That history tied with the fact that each season of American Horror Story may represent a different circle of hell may mean that the apocalypse is going to effect everything. Coinciding timelines can exist in representations of hell, right?

Or maybe all of this is just wild speculation. Regardless it’s weirdly cool to see your favorite AHS locations in the middle of various states of destruction. The end of the world needs to hurry up.
