During its seven season run, Sons of Anarchy never shied away from getting graphic. But in its second episode Mayans M.C. may have beaten its older brother when it comes to sheer brutality. Spoilers ahead.

The first episode of Mayans was stressful, but “Escorpión/Dzec” immediately cranks things up to 11. The premiere episode ended with Adelita (Carla Baratta), the head of the rebel group opposed to the Galindo cartel, ordering her followers to capture Miguel Galindo’s (Danny Pino) baby son. As Miguel and his wife Emily (Sarah Bolger) fret about the fate of their child, Miguel ropes the Mayans Motorcycle Club into helping them search for his baby.

This relatively simple task — find the kid — comes loaded with all sorts of complicated and uncomfortable twists. For one thing, half of the Mayans’ Santo Padre Charter have secretly pledged their allegiance to Adelita, whom they believe represents the future the club should follow. Add in our hero EZ’s (JD Pardo) past relationship with Miguel’s wife Emily and Adelita’s Mr. Robot-esque plan to scare the cartel through viral videos, and the whole situation gets incredibly tense incredibly fast. But Miguel is a cartel leader-in-training who knows no chill.

After Adelita’s resistance posts their veiled threat of a video online, Miguel’s henchmen track down a taqueria food truck vendor who appeared in the video. They tie him up, torture him by throwing hot oil on his face, and scream questions at him. It gets pretty heated after Miguel’s guys bring in the vendor’s young son to watch the torture session, but you know. As far as Sons of Anarchy-inspired torture scenes go, this one is pretty standard. And then Miguel has a conversation with his dad.

Realizing that he can either take his wife Emily’s advice and retain his humanity or retaliate like a murderous psychopath, Miguel decides to go full Norman Bates. “Escorpión/Dzec” ends with the Galindo cartel’s men dumping the charred bodies of two innocent people into the main square — that of the vendor and his son:

That’s right. Mayans M.C. just MURDERED a small child.

During its time on the air Sons of Anarchy never minded getting graphic. According to the show’s wiki, SAMCRO was directly responsible for at least 50 deaths. For god’s sake Kurt Sutter, SOA‘s creator and Mayans‘ co-creator, wrote himself into his own show only to have his character Otto repeatedly raped and brutally murdered by prison guards. Oh and that happened after Otto murdered his rival. The Sons of Anarchy universe is a big fan of graphic murder. But it’s never casually killed a child. Used them as part of elaborate kidnapping plots? Sure. But not murder.

To be fair our heroes — the Mayans — weren’t responsible for this graphic death. However, they are still working for the guy who ordered it, which is going to lead to a lot of questions. Will the Mayans stop working for this cartel? Can they even do that? Will these deaths make Emily leave her husband? And how will Adelita retaliate?

Only the creators of this twisted universe know. We’ll just be over here silently screaming over Mayans‘ first child murder.

New episodes of Mayans M.C. premiere on FX Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET.
