One of the more controversial films of the year, Chappaquiddick, has made its way onto Netflix this week. The critically-acclaimed drama stars Jason Clarke as Senator Ted Kennedy and details the 1969 scandal surrounding the death of Mary Jo Kopechne (Kate Mara), who drowned when Kennedy drove his car off the road into Poucha Pond. The film has been criticized by Kennedy proponents and lauded by conservatives for showing the Kennedy clan in a chilling light.

The 1969 Chappaquiddick incident is one of the fouler scandals in modern American history. After the assassinations of brothers President John F. Kennedy and Senator Bobby Kennedy, young Senator Ted Kennedy was being groomed for national leadership. An inebriated Ted Kennedy left a party on Chappaquiddick island with Mary Jo Kopechne, one of the “Boiler Room Girls” who had worked on Bobby Kennedy’s presidential campaign. Kennedy accidentally drove off the road, landed in water, and fled the scene, leaving Kopechne to die. The Kennedy family fell in line strategizing a national campaign to sway public opinion in Ted’s direction, but the incident was often held up as the thing that sunk his future chances for the presidency.

Chappaquiddick was released in the UK as “The Senator,” and the film currently has a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes (with a 81% positive score). You can now stream Chappaquiddick on Netflix.
