Her Ted Talks have been viewed over 50 million times, she’s topped the New York Times bestseller list five times, and she just gave the opening keynote at SXSW. Now, maybe finally, the superstar social scientist Brené Brown can be seen “Daring Greatly” on Netflix.

Brené recently announced that she will be starring in her very own hour long Netflix special, Brené Brown: The Call to Courage, which is set to be released on April 19. The special was taped in front of a live audience at the University of California (UCLA). In her speech, Brené will break down how courage and vulnerability relate to one another. She will also address the experience she had after her 2010 TED Talk became one of the top five most viewed of all time.

As many were, I was first introduced to Dr. Brené Brown through her viral TEDx video, “The Power of Vulnerability”. Her speech focuses on the life-changing effects of empathy and vulnerability as well as the danger of selectively numbing our emotions. These messages are at the core of Brené’s work to this day.

Brené joins the recently released third season of Queer Eye and Tidying Up With Marie Kondo to create the perfect trifecta of streaming self improvement. I am so here for this trend of positive and inspiring Netflix programming, and I’m pretty sure if you watch all three shows back-to-back, you will immediately achieve enlightenment and transform into Michelle Obama.

We know little else about the content of The Call to Courage, as the special does not share a name with any of Brené’s bestselling books. But I’m sure we will be seeing more of the research-based emotional revelations found in The Gifts of Imperfection, Daring Greatly, Rising Strong, and more that have catapulted Brown to become known as one of the world’s great thinkers.

The reason for Brené’s immense popularity can be boiled down to this: her learnings that are grounded with in-depth research (Brené has been a social scientist and grounded theory researcher for over two decades) and her dedication to making academic jargon relatable and resonant have scored her legions of wholehearted fans around the world.

If Brené’s Netflix special is anything like her TED talk or bestselling books, we can expect it to bring the wholehearted revolution to a brand new audience.

I will end this announcement with two of Brené’s best quotes, as it’s always better to hear it from the woman herself.

This is some of the life changing wisdom you can expect to receive on April 19:

  • “To love someone fiercely, to believe in something with your whole heart, to celebrate a fleeting moment in time, to fully engage in a life that doesn’t come with guarantees – these are risks that involve vulnerability and often pain. But, I’m learning that recognizing and leaning into the discomfort of vulnerability teaches us how to live with joy, gratitude and grace.”
  • “I now see how owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we will ever do.”
