Grab your double swords, because with the release of The Witcher Netflix is gearing up for TV’s next big event. But when exactly will The Witcher premiere on Netflix? And what do you need to know about this upcoming release? We have you covered.

Based on the books of the same name as well as the award-winning video game Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, The Witcher follows the story of Geralt of Rivia. Part of a special tribe of monster hunters called Witchers, Geralt is a stoic loner in a dangerous world. But when he’s tasked with finding and protecting the young Princess Ciri, his already hectic life is thrown into even more chaos. His quest forces him to face countless deadly monsters, corrupt politicians, and an endless amount of secrets in this dark land.

If the ending of Game of Thrones has left you craving a high fantasy replacement, The Witcher seems like a great bet. Here’s everything we know about this upcoming Netflix series.

What Is The Witcher’s Netflix Release Date?

At the moment we don’t have an actual date for when Netflix will premiere its Witcher series. However, we do know roughly when it should air. In April of 2019 Deadline reported that The Witcher would premiere during Netflix’s fourth quarter. That means we can expect it in either October, November, or December of 2019.

Is There a The Witcher Netflix Trailer?

No, there is no trailer for the upcoming series at the moment, but that may change soon. In July it was announced that both Netflix’s The Witcher and Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance would be making appearances at San Diego’s Comic Con later this month. And we all know what Comic Cons are great for: trailer drops.

Who Is in The Witcher Netflix Cast?

We already know who will be playing the big three in this upcoming fantasy drama. Henry Cavill, best known for playing Superman in the DC cinematic universe, is our angsty hero Geralt of Rivia. Anya Chalotra will be playing Yennefer of Vengerberg, Geralt’s love interest and a powerful sorceress. Prior to this series Chalotra starred in the 2018 movie Wanderlust. And rounding out our main trio is Freya Allan who will be playing Geralt’s daughter figure, the mysterious Princess Ciri. The young Allan has also starred in the TV series Into the Badlands.

The Witcher series will also star Jodhi May as Ciri’s grandmother Queen Calanthe; Björn Hlynur Haraldsson as Queen Calanthe’s husband King Eist; and Adam Levy as the druid and Queen Calanthe’s advisor Mousesack. However, The Witcher’s extended cast doesn’t just cover Ciri’s friends and family. It covers Yennefer’s many rivalries as well. MyAnna Buring will star as the sorceress and Yennefer’s guardian Tissaia; Mimi Ndiweni will play the sorceress Fringilla who used to be romantically involved with Geralt; and Therica Wilson-Read plays Yennefer’s long-time rival Sabrina. Millie Brady is also listed as a member of the main cast. She will be playing the brutal and mysterious Princess Renfri.

Is It Based on The Witcher Books?

Yes. Lauren Schmidt Hissrich’s Netflix series will be largely drawing from author Andrzej Sapkowski’s books of the same name. There are altogether eight books in Sapkowski’s Witcher saga: The Last Wish, Sword of Destiny, Blood of Elves, Time of Contempt, Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, The Lady of the Lake, and Season of Storms.

Geralt was introduced in Sapkowski’s first collection of short stories about Witchers, The Last Wish. However since the Netflix show seems to be heavily focused on Princess Ciri, it seems more likely that it will draw from The Witcher saga instead of these short stories. That saga includes Blood of Elves, Time of Contempt, Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and The Lady of the Lake. Visually this world seems to draw from the beloved video game Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but almost everything else comes back to the books.
