Amazon is seemingly pretty confident about their raunchy, dark superhero drama The Boys, as the Eric Kripke produced show has already been picked up for Season 2, before Season 1 even hits Prime Video. The news was announced at the show’s San Diego Comic-Con panel earlier today.
The Boys is based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s comic book series of the same name, about a world where superheroes put up a good front, but behind the scenes take whatever they want, whenever they want. Enter The Boys, a team led by Karl Urban’s Billy Butcher, who take down supes when their antics get out of hand.
Though Urban is the big name on the show, Jack Quaid stars as Hughie, a regular guy who watches his girlfriend get killed, and vows to help take down The Seven, the series’s Justice League-esque superteam. Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford also stars as The Deep, an Aquaman style hero, and Elisabeth Shue is Madelyn Stillwell, a vicious VP from Vought, the company who manages the superheroes.
It’s an interesting time for sci-fi and fantasy at Prime Video. They canceled their critically acclaimed superhero comedy The Tick after two seasons, while spending a ton of money on their upcoming Lord of the Rings adaptation, as well as the lesser-known fantasy mash-up Carnival Row. Clearly, though, they’re not out of the superhero game entirely if they’re this confident about The Boys (and based on what I’ve seen of the show so far, they should be).
And things seem like they’ll only get darker as the show continues. Also announced on the panel, You’re The Worst star Aya Cash will be joining the cast as the superhero Stormfront. The name may clue you in a bit, but in the comics the male character is the series’ Shazam stand-in, while actually a hardcore Nazi literally created by Hitler behind the scenes. Which is sort of like Cash looking at the title of her previous series and saying, “No, now I’m the worst.”
The Boys entire eight episode first season will debut on Prime Video on July 26.
