Mahershala Ali Joins ‘Ramy’ Season 2 as Special Guest Star

Just when you thought Hulu’s critically-acclaimed comedy Ramy couldn’t get any better, it adds a two-time Academy Award-winner for Season 2.

Earlier today at the Television Critics Association’s Summer Press Tour, Hulu announced that Mahershala Ali has been cast as a special guest star in the upcoming second season of Ramy. Ali, who earned Best Supporting Actor accolades for his performances in both Moonlight and Green Book, is said to be a huge fan of the series. The actor is not alone.

Created by and starring Ramy Youssef, Hulu’s trenchant comedy follows the spiritual journey of first-generation Egyptian-American Ramy Hassan (Youssef). Season 1 explored the challenges of what it’s like to be caught between a stringent religious community and live-for-the-moment millennial generation, while Season 2 will delve deeper into Ramy’s spiritual journey, as he finds a new Muslim community and embraces a deeper commitment to Islam.

Also starring Hiam Abbass, May Calamawy, Amr Waked, Stephen Way, and Laith Nakli, Season 1 garnered near-universal acclaim, earning a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. If you have yet to embrace this sophisticated comedy, you can read Joel Keller’s review of the pilot episode on Decider.

While no official release date has been announced, Season 2 of Ramy is scheduled to premiere on Hulu in 2020.
