Apple TV Plus Sets Launch Date, Pricing

Apple is finally divulging details about its new streaming service, Apple TV+. In a presentation today, CEO Tim Cook revealed that the highly-anticipated streaming service will launch worldwide on November 1, with subscriptions priced at just $4.99 per month. According to Variety, Cook also revealed that one year of Apple TV+ will be included for free with the purchase of an iPhone, Apple TV, or Mac — good news for any loyal Apple customer.

When Apple TV+ launches on November 1, users will have access to a variety of shows, including Jason Momoa’s See, Hailee Steinfeld dramedy Dickinson, and Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston’s The Morning Show. Cook used the iPhone event today to premiere the See trailer (check it out below), which he hopes will be the latest success story for the service. “The reaction to these trailers has been incredible,” said the CEO, per Variety. “They’ve been viewed over 100 million times.”

According to Apple, the full list of original content available on November 1 includes:

  • See, an epic drama starring Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard
  • The Morning Show, a drama series starring and produced by Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Anniston
  • Dickinson, a dramedy starring Hailee Steinfeld as young poet Emily Dickinson
  • For All Mankind, a space drama from Ron. D. Moore
  • Helpsters, a children’s series from the makers of Sesame Street
  • Snoopy in Space, an original series from Peanuts Worldwide and DHX Media
  • Ghostwriter, a reinvention of the beloved original series
  • The Elephant Queen, an acclaimed documentary about a species on the verge of extinction
  • An untitled Oprah Winfrey project about her vibrant book club community

While Apple TV+ will boast fewer originals than other streaming services, its price point (and launch date) make it competitive with the likes of Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Amazon. In August, Bloomberg reported that Apple execs were mulling over a $9.99/month subscription fee, but clearly, that price has dropped considerably. At just $4.99/month, Apple TV+ will now be cheaper than Disney+ ($6.99/month) — which launches less than two weeks later on November 12 — Hulu ($5.99/month for its ad-supported plan), Netflix ($8.99/month for its basic plan), and Prime Video ($8.99/month).

In addition to shows debuting on November 1, Apple TV+ has also announced plans for an impressive slate of original content, including Octavia Spencer’s Truth Be Told, anthology series Little America, J.J. Abrams’ Little Voice, Amazing Stories from Steven Spielberg, and more. For more on Apple’s forthcoming projects, see the company’s official press release.
