Glee star Naya Rivera is missing and presumed dead after a boating incident in California on Wednesday afternoon. According to CBS Los Angeles, Rivera’s four-year-old son was found alone in a pontoon boat in Lake Piru just a few hours after the actress rented the boat. Local officials began searching the lake for Rivera at approximately 5 p.m. local time, but as of Thursday morning, she has not been found.

CBS Los Angeles reports that Rivera and her son, Josey, rented a pontoon boat at Lake Piru, about 50 miles from Los Angeles, at about 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Approximately three hours later, another boater found the child alone in the boat and immediately notified Ventura County authorities. Helicopter and dive crews began “to search for [a] possible drowning victim” at about 5 p.m. local time, Page Six reports, and their search continued at daybreak on Thursday.

Rivera’s son, who was unharmed, told authorities that he and his mother were swimming in the lake, but his mother did not get back into the pontoon. Local officials told NBC Los Angeles that Josey was wearing a life vest, but the Glee star was not.

“There’s a lot of challenges in a reservoir this size, at times with visibility,” sheriff’s Capt. Eric Buschow said on Wednesday. “I don’t have details yet as to the depth of the area where the boat was found or what conditions they’re encountering out there.”

Rivera is best known for her role as cheerleader Santana Lopez in Glee. The actress appeared in all six seasons of the musical dramedy, which aired from 2009 to 2015 on Fox. In the years since Glee wrapped, Rivera starred in various film and television projects, including Devious Maids, Charlie Sheen and David Spade’s Mad Families, and Step Up: High Water. In late May, the Step Up spinoff series was picked up by Starz following two seasons on YouTube, and Rivera was expected to reprise her role as Collette Jones, Sage Odom’s (Ne-Yo) partner.
