New Movies and Shows to Stream This Weekend: Black Is King, The Umbrella Academy Season 2, Seriously Single and Inception

The best new movies and shows to watch this weekend are endless, but we will start with some of our top pics below. Disney+ is the exclusive home to Black Is King, the striking new visual album from Beyonce. Over on Netflix, the British teen crime drama series Get Even is ready to get your crime-solving juices flowing while romantic comedies like The Ugly Truth and Seriously Single are looking to tickle both your heart and funny bone. Plus, after much anticipation, Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy is out to blow you out of the water! But Netflix and Disney Plus are not the only platforms with winners this weekend, as Hulu and Amazon Prime Video are releasing fun titles like Inception, My Best Friend’s Wedding and the entire original Star Trek film series to keep you locked and loaded all weekend long. New on Netflix July 31: The Umbrella Academy Season 2

Armageddon is upon us! But wait, before you all start screaming and causing even more pandemonium in the streets, this armageddon is not in reference to the one we are apparently facing today. I am of course talking about the end of the world scenario that our favorite angst-ridden, super-powered adults face in The Umbrella Academy Season 2. For those unfamiliar with this supercharged Netflix-original, The Umbrella Academy is a sci-fi action series about a dysfunctional family of adopted sibling superheroes who reunite after years of estrangement. At the end of Season 1 (spoiler alert!), the group failed to stop armageddon, so they decide to go back in time to prevent the events they failed to prevent from ever happening. However, at the beginning of Season 2, we find the “kids” in 1963 as the world is on the brink of yet another nuclear apocalypse. How is that possible? Throw away your history books for this season, guys, because The Umbrella Academy explores a reality from a different timeline — one where JFK never died, the U.S. declared war on Russia, and everything is just weird. We can’t wait to watch it all unfold in The Umbrella Academy Season 2, one of the top shows to watch this month on Netflix.

New on Netflix July 31: Seriously Single

I don’t know about you guys, but this pandemic has just driven home the point that I am very, very single. Luckily for me — and all the other lonely hearts out there — we can relate to the new Netflix-original film, Seriously Single. Directed by sibling filmmakers Katleho and Rethabile Ramaphakela, this South African romantic comedy tells the story of two best friends navigating singlehood in Johannesburg. When social media manager Dineo experiences another heart-wrenching, embarrassing breakup, she turns to her best friend and free-living expert to show her the benefits of the single life. Needless to say, adventures and antics ensue! If you are looking for a good romantic comedy to celebrate a girls’ night in, Seriously Single is your gal.

New on Hulu August 1: My Best Friend’s Wedding

New on Hulu this weekend is My Best Friend’s Wedding, the classic romantic comedy starring genre experts Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney. The film centers on Julianne Potter (Roberts) a young woman who is eagerly waiting for a proposal from her handsome college buddy Michael (Mulroney) thanks to a marriage pact they had made years before. But when Michael announces his engagement to a beautiful heiress named Kimmy (played by Cameron Diaz), Julianne is overcome with jealousy and rage, and vows to go to the wedding to sabotage it at all costs and win Michael back. It is fascinating to watch Roberts play the bad guy in this romantic comedy with which anyone hopelessly in the friendzone can definitely identify!

New on Amazon Prime Video August 1: Inception

Leonardo DiCaprio stars in Inception, the highly-acclaimed mind warp of a film that is now available on Amazon Prime this weekend. This sci-fi psychological action flick from the mind of Christopher Nolan centers on a thief who possesses the power to enter the minds of others to steal not material goods, but intellectual property. He is the master of psychic espionage, and is a key player in corporate takedowns and backdoor dealings. But when Cobb loses everything, he embarks on one last trip with a team to redeem himself not by stealing an idea, but planting one. But will he do it and get out in time? Find out in Inception. Pro tip: make sure to watch this film with a clear head, because your noggin will definitely be caught up in knots by the end!
