When Is ‘Umbrella Academy’ Season 3 Coming to Netflix?

UPDATE (11/10/20): Netflix has confirmed that Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy is on the way.

Netflix’s resident misfit superheroes are back in action in The Umbrella Academy Season 2. Not only is the show back, but it’s also traveled back in time to 1963 for some truly epic time-travel shenanigans that will blow your mind!

As Umbrella Academy is one of the most bingeable shows on Netflix, odds are you’ve already made your way through all of Season 2. Or maybe you’ve just started but you’re so deeply emotional about what you’ve seen so far that you just need to be assured that more is on the way. That’s where we come in! Here’s everything we know about Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy, including a whole lot of spoilers for the end of Season 2. Skip the next section if you don’t want spoilers!

Does Umbrella Academy Season 2 end on a cliffhanger?

Wow wow wow—again, SPOILER ALERT for this entire section. No joke! Move along if you haven’t finished the season and care about being spoiled!

You ready? Season 2 ends with the aversion of not one, but two apocalypses in two different time periods. The Hargreeves Bunch thwarts nuclear armageddon in 1963 by reaching out and saving Vanya in her time of need. She doesn’t have an outburst that blows up a federal building! Vanya leaves a different permanent mark on 1963, though: back at her adopted farm home, Sissy tries to flee with her son Harlan from her nasty husband Carl. She draws a gun on him in order to protect her son, and in the ensuing fracas the gun goes off. Harlan—using powers accidentally gifted to him when Vanya saved him from drowning—instinctively deflected the bullets, killing his father. That meant trouble for the timeline.

The Handler, her daughter Lila, and every Commission assassin in existence teleported onto the farm for a showdown with the Umbrella Academy. War broke out, with our misfit heroes ultimately emerging victorious thanks to Vanya’s shockwaves, Diego’s love for Lila, and Number Five’s time travel powers. Lila knows the truth about her origin: she was also born on October 1, 1989 and also has powers—but she ran off instead of joining up with the Academy kids.

With the Commission in shambles and doomsday thwarted, the Umbrella Academy prepped to return to 2019. Luther failed to stop his old boss from killing Lee Harvey Oswald; Allison left her husband behind; Klaus’ Vietnam-era lover David enlisted; and Vanya left Sissy behind to care for Harlan (who, unbeknownst to everyone, still has those powers!!). The team returned to a totally intact 2019, one day after they left. The problem: uh, their dad, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, is still alive. And uh, he also has a new bunch of children: The Sparrow Academy. Even more twisted? The leader of that pack is none other than Ben Hargreeves, no longer a ghost. Looks like the world was saved form destruction, but the timeline wasn’t so lucky!

Will there be an Umbrella Academy Season 3 on Netflix?

We don’t know yet—but that doesn’t mean much. The show wasn’t renewed for Season 2 until almost two months after Season 1 dropped, so there is still plenty of time for Netflix to announce a follow-up season. If Season 2 is even close to as big a hit as Season 1, though, a third go-round seems like a lock. Just make sure you watch all of Season 2 as quickly as you can!

When will Umbrella Academy Season 3 come out on Netflix?

Since it seems like the show is guaranteed a third season, the next question is when will we actually be able to binge it. This is a tricky one to answer! First, it took nearly a year and a half for Season 2 to come out. That means we may not see Season 3 until the end of 2021 at the earliest. Then you have to factor in COVID-19. Umbrella Academy is primarily filmed in Ontario. TV production has mostly resumed in Canada, as they actually have it pretty under control up there (476 new cases reported in Canada compared to the US’ 63,255 on July 29). So maybe Season 3 can get underway as scheduled, once Netlfix orders it. We don’t know yet! But it’s probably safe to say that you won’t see Season 3 until the very end of 2021, if not sometime in early 2022.
