‘The Last Dance’ Leads IMDb’s Top TV Shows of 2020 [Exclusive]

During a year when we’re all watching more TV than ever, we certainly have more opinions about our favorite episodes and series. And IMDb has exclusively revealed to Decider some of the top picks of this year so far in their roundup of the most popular shows of 2020. They’ve broken it down into two lists for us: there’s the best shows of the year, or the Top 10 TV Shows of 2020 So Far; and then the most popular new series, the Top 10 New TV Series Debuting in 2020.

To determine the lists, IMDb enlisted the help of its users. The rankings come from IMDb user ratings, and if they can tell us one thing, it’s that The Last Dance was clearly the breakout hit of the year. The gripping story of the iconic 1997 Chicago Bulls team debuted during the live sports drought early in the pandemic, so it’s no surprise that ESPN’s smash hit docuseries leads both in the Top 10 TV Shows of 2020 So Far and the Top 10 New TV Series Debuting in 2020.

HBO‘s Stephen King adaptation The Outsider and Hulu‘s romantic drama series Normal People also appeared on both the Top 10 Shows of 2020 and the Top 10 New Series lists, landing at No. 2 and No. 3 on the Top 10 New Series list, respectively. IMDb’s lists can also tell us that 2020 has been a bit of a dark year — in total, there are only three comedy series on the two lists. At No. 2 on the Top 10 Shows of 2020, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver stands out as the lone late night show on the list with Larry David’s comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm landing at No. 8. On the Top 10 New Shows of 2020 list, Hulu’s Dave marks the only comedy, sitting at No. 5.

Along with the Top 10 TV Shows and Top 10 New TV Shows of 2020 so far, IMDb has also rolled out a new feature called the What to Watch page, which helps users find trending movies and shows from all around the globe. The page features recommendations from celebrities, some of the latest trailers, and some of IMDb’s streaming picks. To get some personalized selection, registered users can opt to rate, review and add films and series to their IMDb Watchlist.
