Netflix‘s documentary version of The Social Network is here, and it may just convince you to delete your Facebook account. In The Social Dilemma, ex-Silicon Valley workers and computer scientist theorists talk about the dangers of algorithm-based technology. Under the powers of social media, society as we know it could be in grave danger.

The Social Dilemma combines tech expert interviews with dramatized footage of a Facebook-obsessed teen. While you listen to the warnings and interviews with professionals, the film allows you to watch a cautionary tale in real-time.

Who is in the cast of The Social Dilemma? Who are the experts interviewed? Here’s everything you need to know about The Social Dilemma cast.

Meet the cast of The Social Dilemma: who are the actors in the social media doc?

As mentioned, The Social Dilemma pivots from real-life interviews to dramatization — it’s a hybrid doc. While the ex-Silicon Valley workers talk about working at places like Facebook and Google, social media-addicted teen scrolls through his feeds. He’s played by Skyler Gisondo, who’s famous for his roles in Santa Clarita Diet and Booksmart. His phone A.I. system is also played by a celebrity — Vincent Kartheiser of Mad Men voices the evil algorithm set out to entrap users. Moonrise Kingdom‘s Kara Hayward is also featured in the dramatized cast.

Who are the professionals interviewed in The Social Dilemma?

There are a slew of Silicon Valley and tech experts interviewed in The Social Dilemma, and a few stand out. Tim Kendall is the first major name involved in the documentary. He’s the former president of Pinterest, and he also worked as Director of Monetization at Facebook for a few years. In The Social Dilemma, Kendall speaks on being worried about a social media civil war. Yikes. Now, Kendall’s the CEO of Moment, an app that hopes to break social media addiction.

Jaron Lanier, a computer scientist and philosophy writer, is another talking head in The Social Dilemma. Lanier has no social media accounts — but he does frequently write about the dangers of social media and gadgets. He has written the books Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now and You Are Not a Gadget. In the doc, Lanier warns that if we keep using social media, it could destroy our civilization.

Tristan Harris, co-founder and president of the Center for Humane Technology also adds his insight into the discourse in The Social Dilemma. He hasn’t completely removed himself from Silicon Valley — Harris works in technology ethics. He used to work at Google, and he’s collaborated with many social media sites to assist in their digital well-being initiatives.
