Just when you thought Amazon’s Michael B. Jordan Super Bowl campaign couldn’t get any sexier, the tech giant goes ahead and drops a release date for Without Remorse. Directed by Stefano Sollima, Prime Video’s Without Remorse stars Jordan as John Clark, a U.S. Navy Seal who sets out for revenge following his wife’s murder. The new thriller, a spinoff of popular Jack Ryan series, will debut Friday, April 30 on Amazon.

Without Remorse is the first film released under a new, expanded deal between Amazon Studios and Jordan’s Outlier Society banner. Under the pact, Outlier Society will produce and acquire elevated films showcasing diverse, bold filmmakers and talent for Amazon’s ever-growing original movies slate, explains a press release.

In addition to Jordan, Without Remorse stars Jamie Bell, Jodie Turner-Smith, Luke Mitchell, Jack Kesy, Brett Gelman, Colman Domingo, Jacob Scipio, Cam Gigandet, and Todd Lasance.

Without Remorse has had an interesting journey from script to screen. Savoy Pictures first purchased rights to the film shortly after the Tom Clancy’ novel was released in 1993, but the film was repeatedly re-cast (at various points, Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Tom Hardy were rumored to have been offered the lead role) and shut down before languishing in development hell. In 2018, Jordan was finally cast as John Clark and later that year, Sollima and Sons of Anarchy alum Taylor Sheridan and Will Staples (The Right Stuff) joined the project as director and co-writers, respectively.

After completing production in late 2019, Without Remorse was slated to be released by Paramount Pictures in September 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Without Remorse release date was shifted repeatedly, and in July 2020, Amazon acquired global streaming rights to the action flick.

Without Remorse is by no means the only film Amazon has acquired since the COVID-19 pandemic first began. In recent months, Prime Video snagged a series of high-profile films, including Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Sylvie’s Love, and Sundance drama Herself. In early March, Amazon will also release Coming 2 America (another Paramount acquisition), a sequel to Eddie Murphy’s beloved comedy Coming to America.
