Glenn Close’s “Da Butt” Dance Was the Oscars’ Most Brilliant Chaotic Moment

Glenn Close might have once again lost the Oscar, but she won Oscar night with her “Da Butt” dance. The Hillbilly Elegy star saved an otherwise meandering bit about “Best Oscar Song” trivia by not only correctly identifying a Spike Lee soundtrack deep cut, but gamely getting up and shaking her proverbial butt. Glenn Close’s “Da Butt” moment might have been one of the most chaotic moment in an already insane (and insanely delightful?) Oscar night.

After Zendaya awarded the Oscars for Best Original Song to H.E.R. for her contribution to Judas and the Black Messiah and Best Score to Trent Reznor, Atticus Finch, and Jon Baptiste, Lil Rel Howery descended into the audience for some crowd work. After stumping an uninterested Andra Day on the Oscar snub for “Purple Rain” and Daniel Kaluuya for “Last Dance”s Oscar win, Howery turned to Glenn Close. The icon had teased table-mate Kaluuya that he was too young to get the “Last Dance” reference. So Howery (and DJ Questlove) tried to stump her on “Da Butt,” a song from Spike Lee’s 1988 film School Daze. Close, though, nailed the trivia to the delight of the crowd.

“Wait just a second. That’s ‘Da Butt,'” Close said.

Whether it was scripted or not doesn’t matter because Close’s exuberant “Da Butt” dance won the crowd over for eternity. Twitter, of course, took note.

Close remains one of the most illustrious acting icons to not be awarded an Academy Award, but tonight she showed the Oscars why she’s still the freaking best.
