This weekend, there’s a movie for every genre. From family-friendly fun to brutal action to… Annette, which is sort of in a category all its own, there are plenty of new movies on VOD to please everyone. In Annette, filmmaker Leos Carax makes his English-language debut with a weirdly wonderful rock opera starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard. Annette‘s music is courtesy of Sparks, the music duo that consists of Ron and Russel Mael, who were also the subject of the recent Edgar Wright documentary, The Sparks Brothers. In Riders of Justice, Mads Mikkelsen teams with filmmaker Anders Thomas Jensen for a witty and poignant skull cracker. If you’re not used to your violent revenge tales being witty and poignant, you’re in for a treat.

And finally, for those of you who are just desperate to support Kim Kardashian’s voice acting career, PAW Patrol: The Movie is out now in theaters and on Paramount+. The antics of Chase, Zuma, Skye, and the rest of the courageous rescue pups from Adventure Bay hit the big screen with help from several high profile cameos from folks like Kardashian, Tyler Perry, Randall Park and Jimmy Kimmel. The result is a family-friendly adventure that will hopefully buy busy parents a solid 88 minutes of rest and relaxation on the couch.

Annette

The titular character of Annette is a puppet, but you probably knew that. And she’s Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard’s baby. I mean, if that’s not already intriguing enough, the rest of the plot of Annette just piles on the weird. Driver stars as Henry McHenry, a stand-up comedian whose self-serious rants masquerade as comedy, and who himself is becoming overshadowed by his wife, Ann (Cotillard), an opera singer. Their relationship is fierce and hot and full of sex. It is also doomed. When Ann dies, Annette gains the ability to sing using Ann’s voice and Henry tries to exploit Baby Annette’s talents. Ultimately, his temper leads to further tragedy.

Riders Of Justice

Riders of Justice stars Mads Mikkelsen as a man named Markus, whose wife Emma is killed in a subway train explosion. The thing is, Emma would have survived if a man named Otto had not given her his seat. Otto did survive the explosion, and he comes to Markus one day to tell him that the train explosion was no accident, and that it was orchestrated by a group called the Riders of Justice. And that’s where the revenge plot begins. And yes, like Liam Neeson and Bob Odenkirk before him, it turns out Mads has a particular set of skills that make him the perfect man for this job. What sets Riders of Justice apart from films like Taken is how darkly funny it can be. Nobody had a similar sense of humor, but Riders is simultaneously funny while also layered with philosophical musings and life lessons.
