Amid a rift that’s opened up between the Spears sisters, Jamie Lynn is stepping into the spotlight to explain the current feud with sister Britney on a new special with ABC‘s Nightline. In a new interview with Juju Chang, the actress discussed her new book Things I Should Have Said, also explaining her public feud with Britney as the pop-star’s 13-year-long conservatorship came to an end last year.

Jamie Lynn, who is 10 years younger than her sister, says that there wasn’t any tension between her and her older sibling growing up: “I adored her. She felt like everything to me,” Spears said. “I felt like she was another mama.”

But as the years passed, Jamie Lynn noticed that her sister’s behavior began to change, becoming “erratic,” “paranoid,” and “spiraling.” When prodded about Britney’s current state of being, Jamie Lynn refused to expand on what might be going through her head.

“I can’t really speak to anyone else’s state of mind. I don’t know if that’s fair. But I’m allowed to say how I felt in those, because that matters. It matters that I was in pain,” Jamie Lynn explained. “That love is still there 100 percent. I love my sister. I’ve only ever loved and supported her, and done what’s right by her. And she knows that. I don’t know why we’re in this position right now.”

As for the conservatorship, Jamie Lynn went on to explain that she was never really made aware of what was going on at the time.

“First off, I don’t understand — when it was put into place, I was 17 years old,” she said. “I was about to have a baby. I didn’t understand what was happening, nor was I focused on that. I was focused on the fact that I was a 17-year-old about to have a baby. I understand just as little about it then as I do now.”

Her sister eventually reached out for help, Jamie Lynn says: “There was a time when my sister asked me, of her trust and will, if I would be the person who was sure that her boys got what they needed. Whether she was in a conservatorship or not, that was a very normal thing, I thought.”

Ultimately, Jamie Lynn denies playing a major role in the conservatorship.

“There was no me overseeing funds or something like that,” she said. “And if it was, that was a misunderstanding. Either way, I took no steps to be a part of it.”

Jamie Lynn explained that there was a point in time in which Britney’s now-former legal team was set up with her as an aide, but it ended poorly. Still, Jamie Lynn wants the best for her sister.

“I’ve always been my sister’s biggest supporter. When she needed help, I set up ways to do so. Went out of my way to make sure that she had the contacts she needed to possibly go ahead and end this conservatorship — end this all, for our family. If it’s going to cause this much discord, why continue it?” Spears explained. “I did take the steps to help. But how many steps can I take without — she has to walk through the door.”

The rest of Jamie Lynn Spear’s interview will air tonight on Nightline at 11:35 p.m. ET.
