Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls won the Emmy for Outstanding Competition Program and the pop star was overwhelmed with emotion about it. While accepting the award on behalf of the Prime Video series, Lizzo gave the “big girls” of her show the biggest shoutout, while noting that all she wanted to see on television as a child was someone like her.

The Prime Video reality show Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls followed the titular music star as she auditioned dancers for her tour. As you can tell from the title, Lizzo explicitly wanted dancers who other musicians might otherwise count out because of their size. She wanted to show the world their star quality, charisma, and sheer talent.

“The trophy is nice, but my emotion is for these people on the stage with me,” Lizzo said. “The stories that they shared, they’re not that unique, they just don’t get the platform. Telling stories, let’s just tell more stories.”

“When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media. Someone fat like me, black like me, beautiful like me. If I could go back and tell little Lizzo something, I’d be like, ‘You’re gonna see that person, but bitch it’s gonna have to be you.'”

Lizzo pointed to her dancers in the rafters and shared the spotlight, and later Geena Davis would shoutout Lizzo during her acceptance speech for the Governor’s Award, which she earned thanks to her work advocating for more representation in television.

Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls beat out the likes of Nailed It!, RuPaul’s Drag Race, The Amazing Race, The Voice, and Top Chef for the Outstanding Competition Program Emmy. You can watch Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls on Prime Video.
