The Banshees of Inisherin

Powered by Reelgood

I know that technically there are only four seasons, but I choose to think of our annual spin around the sun as having five. That’s becuse, in addition to winter, spring, summer, and fall, my favorite season has always been awards season. And some of the year’s biggest prestige films are out now on VOD so you can start checking them off your list. Both The Banshees of Inisherin and The Fabelmans are up for Golden Globes in the Best Picture and acting categories, and you can check out both films on your small screen at home as of this week.

In addition, Luca Guadagnino’s newest film Bones And All, which stars Timothee Chalamet and Taylor Russell, is also available on VOD. The film can be summed up as a coming-of-age tale about cannibals on a road trip. The two actors play Lee and Maren, young lovers who met after realizing that they share a love of the same food – people. Even though they find comfort in knowing that they share a common, unique bond, there’s still a chilling, horrific quality to their love and their uncontrollable desire for flesh.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

The Banshees of Inisherin

Martin McDonagh’s latest film, The Banshees of Inisherin, was just nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy film, but the humor is a dark, melancholic kind that’s deeply Irish and very bittersweet. This tale of friendship and isolation is set on a gorgeously unspoiled island off the coast of Ireland, the fictional isle of Inisherin. In the film, Colin Farrell stars as Pádraic, a dim but kind man who learns that his best friend, Colm (Brendan Gleeson) no longer wants to be his friend. As Pádraic tries to win his friend back, Colm becomes increasingly firm that he wants nothing to do with him, which leads both men to respond to the situation in very desperate and dangerous ways.

The Fabelmans

For even more award-bait, check out Steven Spielberg’s new film, The Fabelmans, which is basically everything that comprises the essence of Spielberg, and has also been nominated for two Golden Globes. It’s a coming of age tale that’s loosely based on Spielberg’s own adolescence, and is rooted in his developing passion for film making. Gabriel LaBelle stars as Sammy, a boy who retreats from his turbulent family life by immersing himself in filmmaking. Spielberg has said that the idea for the film was first conceived over 20 years ago, but it was only after he worked with Tony Kushner on West Side Story that the pair collaborated on the script that would become The Fabelmans.
