Currently nominated for eight Golden Globe Awards, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin has become a major hit among audiences and critics alike.

The Irish comedy takes place in 1923 and follows two lifelong friends, Pádraic Súilleabháin and Colm Doherty, played by Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, and the abrupt ending of their relationship. The movie also stars Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan.

In addition to receiving praise for its story and performances, the film has commanded attention for its production design which includes stunning shots of the coast of Ireland.

Decider’s John Serba wrote in his review, “McDonough roots the drama in the peaty soil of Irish melancholy and black comedy. Its heartbreak is as potent as its comedy, both intertwined with the rhythms of the dialogue. Consider the setting – lovely scenery, dim lighting, silence, nothing to distract one from the flawed workings of one’s mind, as the sun, an orange coin on the horizon, sets majestically.”

The film was shot in multiple areas around Ireland, which McDonagh says was to capture the made-up aspects of Inisherin. He said, “Inisherin is a fictional island, so I didn’t want it to be specifically one place. I wanted it to be more mythical,” per production notes.

Where Was The Banshees of Inisherin Filmed?

The Banshees of Inisherin was shot in Inishmore and Achill Island in Ireland.

Pádraic and Siobhán’s (Condon) house was shot in a town called Gort Na gCapall in Inishmore (where they filmed for three weeks) after being built “piece by piece” on a field.

Production designer Mark Tildesley explained, “Martin took us to some super extreme places. We came back a few steps from the coastline and found a location on the edge of the cliff to build the house, looking down over one long end of the island towards an ancient monument called Dún Aonghasa.”

For Kearney’s (Keoghan) home, the production team repaired an already-existing cottage.

After shooting in Inishmore, the crew relocated to Achill Island to shoot the pub and Colm’s (Gleeson) home. The pub – described as a “major character” in the story – was built for the production and the home was filmed in a pre-existing fisherman’s cottage.

Filming also took place in Lough Acorrymore, a lake near Achill Island, St. Thomas’s Church, and a local shop.

The Banshees of Inisherin is currently streaming on HBO Max, Prime Video, and VOD.
