SAG Awards Find New Home on Netflix

The Screen Actors Guild Awards have found their new home after breaking up with TNT. It was announced this morning that the 29th annual awards ceremony will broadcast live on Netflix‘s YouTube channel on Sunday, Feb. 26.

The annual event, which typically precedes the Academy Awards, has aired on TNT since 1998 and began being simulcast on TBS in 2007. However, last May, it was announced that the networks will no longer air the awards show.

SAG states that this is a “multi-year partnership” between themselves and Netflix and they plan to stream the ceremony live on the platform in 2024.

“We are thrilled to embark on this exciting new partnership with Netflix and we look forward to expanding the global audience for our show. As the only televised awards program exclusively honoring the performances of actors, whose work is admired by millions of fans, the SAG Awards are a unique and cherished part of the entertainment universe,” said SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland in a statement.

Netflix Head of Global TV Bela Bajaria shared, “The SAG Awards are beloved by the creative community and viewers alike, and now even more fans around the world will be able to celebrate these talented actors. As we begin to explore live streaming on Netflix, we look forward to partnering with SAG-AFTRA to elevate and expand this special ceremony as a global live event in 2024 and the years to come.”

In addition to the news of this exciting collaboration, the Guild will be announcing the nominations for the awards show today at 10 a.m. ET via Instagram Live. The nominations will begin with remarks from SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher and will proceed with Stunt nominations by SAG Awards Committee members Jason George and Elizabeth McLaughlin.

Ashley Park and Haley Lu Richardson, respective stars of Emily in Paris and The White Lotus, are set to reveal the acting nominees for film and television.

In a statement about the nominations, the Guild explained that the nominations are presented exclusively through Instagram Live as part of an initiative to be more accessible to their audience. “The SAG Awards aims to utilize the innovation of social media channels to create an authentic connection with their audience by reimagining the Nominations Announcement as a seamless, virtual experience for both nominees and fans,” read the statement.

SAG deciding to partner with Netflix for the awards ceremony is a welcoming move towards the inclusivity of streaming entertainment in traditional Hollywood forums. Last night’s Golden Globe Awards saw numerous streaming projects taking home the gold, including Netflix’s Ozark and Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio, and Apple TV+’s Black Bird.

The Academy Awards still does not recognize streaming talent after loosening requirements in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the organization requires all eligible movies to have a 7-day theatrical run with at least one screening per day in an approved major metropolitan areas.
