Dearest readers, the ‘ton is about to welcome a new couple to swoon over. Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story will premiere on Netflix on May 4, 2023. Netflix revealed this news along with a steamy new teaser trailer, exclusive show clips, eight new images, and more during their Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story virtual fan event. Happy Valentine’s Day to one and all!

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is a prequel series set in Shondaland’s Bridgerton universe. The show will tell the story of how Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) met and fell in love with King George III (James Fleet), who is sadly in the grips of mental illness during the main Bridgerton series. Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story will flashback to when the young royal couple, played by India Amarteifio and Corey Mylchreest, forged a society-changing partnership that opened the door for Bridgerton‘s fictional post-racial wonderland. The Queen Charlotte show will also give us a glimpse of Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh) as a young woman, played in the past by newcomer Arsema Thomas.

The first teaser trailer for Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story shows a younger, less self-assured version of the queen arriving to London via carriage. We then cut to what appears to be the moment where Charlotte and George first meet. (A clip leading up to this moment was first shared last year during Netflix’s annual hype-fest TUDUM.)

We see hands touching, followed by a flash forward to a sad looking Queen Charlotte in the Regency era, and then a romantic ballroom dance scene. George’s mother, Princess Augusta (Michelle Fairley) angrily tells him, “Your marriage is the business of this country! This cannot go wrong!” as a montage of Charlotte and George bickering plays.

But all is not doom and gloom. We then get what Bridgerton fans are really waiting for: a supercut of steamy sex scenes, uh, bookended by young Lady Danbury telling Queen Charlotte, “You are the first of your kind. You must secure your position.” Those positions seem to be sexual ones.

Then there’s a cut between young and older Lady Danbury, Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell), gloved hands touching, more ballroom scenes, more steamy moments, and young Charlotte declaring, “This is my home. I am the queen,” while we watch her coronation. The final shot of the trailer is of King George and Queen Charlotte holding hands in their full royal regalia.

In a series of new photos, Bridgerton fans can get their first looks at some new characters in the series, including Princess Augusta sitting in the same imposing position that a future Queen Charlotte will often occupy in Bridgerton. There’s also a new close up of young King George, an image of what appears to be Charlotte on her coronation day, and a look at the older versions of Lady Danbury and Violet Bridgerton enjoying tea with the queen.

It was also revealed during the virtual fan event that this spring “Her Majesty” will be bringing “The Queen’s Ball: A Bridgerton Experience” to New York City. The immersive fan event invites attendees to dress in their Regency finest and present themselves to the Queen. “The Queen’s Ball: A Bridgerton Experience” is a co-production of Shondaland, Netflix, and Fever and you can sign up for the waitlist now.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story‘s May premiere will certainly give Bridgerton fans something to swoon over while production continues on Season 3 of the main show. Bridgerton Season 3 is mixing up the order of the popular Julia Quinn novels, tackling Book 4’s romance between Penelope “Lady Whistledown” Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin “Where are the Snacks?” Bridgerton (Luke Newton). No word yet on when fans can expect Bridgerton Season 3 to hit Netflix.

But Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is indeed premiering on Netflix on May 4, 2023. While it’s not based on any of Julia Quinn’s novels, there will be a lot of romance for the Shonda Rhimes-helmed series to explore. While historians are divided on whether or not Queen Charlotte was herself a mixed race royal, they are in agreement that she and her King George loved each other. George III took no royal mistress and the couple had fifteen children. That’s a lot of baby-making to explore.
