The View isn’t afraid of any topic, no matter how thorny it may get. And on today’s show, the debate certainly got fiery as the co-hosts sounded off on Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom‘s move to stop business with Walgreens after they chose not to sell abortion medication in certain states that have threatened legal repercussions.

The Democratic governor tweeted on Monday (March 6), “California won’t be doing business with @walgreens — or any company that cowers to the extremists and puts women’s lives at risk. We’re done.”

But not everyone around the Hot Topics table celebrated his declaration. Alyssa Farah Griffin, The View‘s conservative voice, said, “I think this is the wrong target by Gov. Newsom, just to take the other side on it. Walgreens is following a state law.”

She continued, “His issue is with the state laws, I don’t think we should be targeting a private company for following a state law. Take it up with Texas if you think that abortion pills should be provided. And I would note, every company that sells — whether it’s plan B or in this case, mifepristone, I believe is the pill that they use — CVS is gonna run into this, Amazon is gonna run into it.

“You can’t target the companies, and Gavin Newsom has made a name for himself after going after Ron Desantis … for targeting Disney,” Griffin added. “He says, ‘We shouldn’t be targeting private companies for what they’re exercising.’ This is more egregious. Walgreens is simply following the state law.”

Sunny Hostin then shared her take that “conservatism was always about limited government” and “more freedom,” but controlling access to contraception in conservative states is “taking freedom away from women.”

But Griffin reclaimed the spotlight, telling her co-hosts, “Just real quick, back to my friend Gov. Newsom, who decided to take a vacation while people are dying in San Bernardino—”

Whoopi Goldberg wasn’t having it. She stepped in and cut Griffin off, telling her, “That has nothing to do with what we’re talking about right now. Let’s stick to this.”

Griffin got the message, continuing, “On this, you’re targeting a company for following state laws,” but was still met with resistance from Goldberg, who told her, “No, then I didn’t say it right. There are states that have no issue.”

As Griffin listed off the possible side effects of mifepristone, Goldberg was skeptical, replying, “if your doctor prescribes it to you, haven’t you discussed that?”

Still, Griffin wasn’t going down without a fight, wondering why Newsom isn’t targeting the attorney general. She said, “It seems like it’s ‘boycott Walgreens.'”
