The rumors over Paramount Network’s Yellowstone are almost as dramatic as the show itself at this point. Earlier this week, it was reported that the show’s star, Kevin Costner, would not return to the show after its fifth season. Today it’s been confirmed that season five will definitely be the final season of the show, and that it is still unclear whether Costner has agreed to appear in it.

The second half of season five, which has not begun filming, was slated to begin production in August. Of course, that’s subject to change given the current writer’s strike, which has already shut down production on most late-night talk shows, as well as Saturday Night Live, and other weekly series.

But if the strike is resolved and the original timeline goes as planned, new episodes of the Western drama will drop in November on Paramount Network (and time and contract negotiations) will tell whether Costner will reach an agreement to appear.

Costner has reportedly been at odds with Yellowstone‘s showrunner Taylor Sheridan, with sources alleging that Sheridan has a “God complex” which has resulted in production delays and friction on the set.

Though the end of Yellowstone is now confirmed, that doesn’t mean that the Duttons are finished for good. A sequel to Yellowstone has been greenlit and (pending writers’ strike negotiations) is projected to premiere on Paramount Network this December.

The new show will be written by Sheridan will star several original Yellowstone cast members, and Matthew McConaughey is also in negotiations to star. Unlike the original Yellowstone, which cannot be streamed on Paramount+, the new show will be available on the streaming platform.
