Everyone’s favorite brainiac came back when Young Sheldon premiered on CBS in 2017. The spinoff series visits the bizarre childhood of one of the most popular characters to stem from network television in recent years: The Big Bang Theory‘s Sheldon Cooper.

Child actor Iain Armitage plays Sheldon, a socially awkward genius growing up in Medford, Texas. When the show began in 2017, Sheldon was just a nine-year-old boy set to join his older brother in high school after skipping a few grades.

But Season 6 saw the young prodigy trying to survive college as he juggles his personal aspirations with the social demands that come with the territory. From getting duct-taped to a wall by his dorm mates, to contemplating dropping out, campus life proved to be quite difficult for Sheldon.

Yes! The hit CBS show was renewed for three more seasons back in 2021, so the series is set to continue with at least one more season.

Season 7 will likely get a fall release date as previous seasons have, but the current CBS fall schedule does not include any mention of new Young Sheldon episodes. Considering most production and promotion has been put on hold due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, there has not been much news about how Season 7 will shape up.

Next season will be a doozie, however. TVLine previously reported that the producers were considering making Season 7 the series finale as Sheldon will be turning 14, an age where the future Nobel prize winner is set to reach multiple major milestones, as per the timeline set in Big Bang Theory.

According to the original show, Sheldon began graduate school at the California Institute of Technology at that age. But that was also the year he lost his father, George Cooper Sr.

“There are certainly things we know we want to hit next season, and there are certain things where, if it’s the end versus if it’s just [another season], those things might be different,” executive producer Steve Holland told TVLine. “It’s not my decision to make. I don’t think we’ll know for a while, but I don’t think it will effect the first half of [Season 7].”

Season 6 left off just as Sheldon was set to take a summer trip to Germany, so there is certainly plenty of material to mine from. This could mean that there may be a Season 8, as well — stay tuned!
