Ooh wee! How is Adult Swim gonna pull off this one? The last time we saw Rick & Morty fan-favorite Mr. Poopybutthole, his wife and son had left him and he had broken both of his legs while heavy-lifting at the gym. It’s fair to say that the character has had quite the downfall since meeting the Smith family — and fans aren’t sure where Season 7 will find him, especially now that he will be voiced by a new actor.

Adult Swim unveiled a “first listen” to the new character voices for Rick and Morty in its latest trailer drop, on September 25, 2023, following co-creator and actor Justin Roiland’s ousting due to domestic violence charges. In addition to the two titular characters, Roiland voiced a handful of famed recurring roles, such as the dimension-hopping, “zany” Mr. Poopybutthole.

The character, who is a small yellow person with an oblong head and a black top hat, made his first appearance in the Season 2 episode “Total Rickall,” and quickly became friends with the core family.

Ever since, Mr. Poopybutthole has been featured in every season, with three episodes in Season 3 and one episode in each of the subsequent seasons.

Well, Season 7 will be no different as the popular character popped up in the eventful trailer, which also teased the return of Susan Sarandon’s Dr. Wong, who played a major role in the “Pickle Rick” episode.

In the trailer, Mr. Poopybutthole is seen at a bar with Rick, and there’s a cupcake placed in front of him, suggesting that it’s his birthday.  The two characters appear shocked when a random bar patron shoves Mr. Poopybutthole’s face into the desert. It looks like the character’s bad luck streak has not ended yet!

In a surprising twist, fans were quick to accept the soundalikes who replaced the voices for Rick and Morty in the trailer, but given Adult Swim’s secrecy surrounding the voice actors, many are still tossing around their own theories.

One fan took to Reddit to express their anticipation for Mr. Poopybutthole’s new voice: “Everyone is talking about Rick and Morty, but I want to hear Mr. Poopybutthole’s new voice.” In response, another fan commented, “Dude 70% of all the voices were voiced by Roiland… everything is gonna sound weird and muffled and different.” A third fan disagreed, emphasizing that Roiland did not, in fact, voice 70% of the characters, and Rick, Morty, and Mr. Poopybutthole are the only recurring characters expected to appear in the impending season.

In addition to voicing variations of the two main characters in the series, Roiland also lent his voice to Mr. Meeseeks and Noob-Noob, both of whom make cameos in future episodes, along with Albert Einstein and other small roles.

Another commenter pointed out that Solar Opposites — another show Roiland co-created and acted in — effortlessly recast Roiland’s smaller roles, with Eric Bauza, who has been rumored to replace Roiland in Rick and Morty, replacing him in a guest appearance as the Red Goobler in the latest season. “Red Goobler’s voice was replaced pretty well, so I imagine it wasn’t hard for them to find a replacement for Mr Poopybutthole,” wrote the fan.

There has been plenty of talk about Roiland’s replacement since the first hint at the show’s return, but fans shouldn’t expect casting information to be released soon. Following the release of the trailer, The Hollywood Reporter was told by an Adult Swim insider that the network plans to keep the new voices under wraps because they “want the show to speak for itself.”

Honestly, with Mr. Poopybutthole only appearing in brief cameos throughout the series, the character’s recasting shouldn’t pose too much of a challenge for the network. Though, given that he’s a fan-favorite, the stakes are high with this one!

Rick & Morty Season 7 premieres October 15, 2023 on Adult Swim.
