If the last episode of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off didn’t move you to tears, the dedication card during the credits surely will. Following the final moments of the first season of the Netflix anime series, a touching tribute card that reads “to our friend Doug Sherwood” appears on the screen.

For many years, Douglas Sherwood played a substantial role in the Scott Pilgrim franchise.

Sherwood worked as a production assistant for the final two volumes of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novels, Scott Pilgrim v.s. The Universe and Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour.

According to Sherwood’s obituary, he also “was influential” in the creation of Edgar Wright’s 2010 cult movie adaptation, which catapulted the franchise into the mainstream.

The movie starred Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers, and follows the titular character as he battles seven evil exes on his quest to date Ramona.

For over 12 years, Sherwood gained experience as a letterer, production artist, editor, and curator. He held several different positions at the independent comic publisher Oni Press for a majority of his career, where he contributed to Scott Pilgrim, Petrograd, and Wasteland

While at Oni Press, Sherwood led a fundraiser benefitting the Hemophillia Foundation of Oregon, which resulted in a donation of over $5,000.

Sherwood died at age 39 on January 23, 2023. He was diagnosed with severe hemophilia B at a young age, which is a chronic condition caused by a lack of blood clotting Factor IX.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is currently streaming on Netflix.
