Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is a popular LGBT+ coming-of-age story that follows two Mexican-American teenage boys in El Paso in the late 1980s.

Based on the 2012 novel by Benjamin Alire Sáenz, the movie adaptation premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2022 ahead of its limited theatrical release on Sept. 8, 2023.

About two months later, Aristotle and Dante was released on video-on-demand platforms. Now, the beloved movie has set its streaming premiere for March 8, 2024 on STARZ.

Aristotle and Dante premiered to high critical acclaim and currently has a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie was also included on Best Movies list published by The Wrap and Autostraddle.

The synopsis reads, “Based on Benjamin Alire Sáenz’s YA novel, the film centers on the friendship between two teenage Mexican-American loners in 1987 El Paso who explore a new, unusual friendship and the difficult road to self-discovery.”

Directed and written by Aitch Alberto, the LGBT+ drama stars newcomers Max Pelayo and Reese Gonzales as the title characters with Verónica Falcón, Kevin Alejandro, Eva Longoria, and Eugenio Derbez in supporting roles.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, who recorded the audiobook for Sáenz’s novel and the sequel, produced the movie and makes a voiceover cameo.

On Feb. 26, Miranda promoted the movie at United Palace in New York City as part of his “Movies We Missed” series, which recognizes 2023 releases that were impacted by the writers and actors strikes. Following a screening of Aristotle and Dante, Miranda hosted a talkback with Alberto, Pelayo and Gonzales.

Speaking about the filmmaking process, Alberto said, “Everybody showed up with so much love. We were talking about it while in the city, last night at dinner, about how everything leading up to it was difficult, after we shot was difficult, but during that production, there was just this magic from everybody that’s so hard to explain.”

Gonzales spoke about his reaction to seeing the movie on the big screen, saying, “When I was finally able to absorb it, I was really proud of it because we worked hard and you could see the love that we all feel for the story on the screen and that’s what was most important to me.”

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe will begin streaming March 8 on STARZ.
